I’m a big believer in adding a personalized touch for gifts. What better way to do that than making something?! Plus homemade gifts are super budget friendly. Here’s the issue for me this year- I don’t have a ton of time to hand make stuff! So here are my three ideas for adding that special something-
- personalize your gifts! I hand painted a portrait on each of my gifts this year. These are inspired by Rifle Paper co. and add some whimsy to the plain craft paper wrapping. It’s more labor intensive than writing on a tag, but how cute?!
2. I am making Don a car mat this year. Don is super into matchbox cars and driving them around, so I thought I would buy a few dollars worth of felt to make him a little mat that he can have more fun on (bonus points for it being able to fold up!). I was going to hand cut out buildings and add them, but I was looking on Amazon and found little 3D buildings that I thought would be even better!
3. Give the gift of knitting! I found the cutest company (We are Knitters) that sell kits so that you can knit your own project. You could give the kit away, or use it to make a friend a gift! That’s what I am doing. Here’s the catch- I didn’t know how to knit before I bought the kit (I knitted a downtown snood)! Haha! So I learned by watching YouTube videos. We are Knitters has their own videos that are super helpful. I first figured out how to cast on. Then I practiced the knit and pearl stitches on different yarn before I used the yarn from the kit to do the stitch.
I really loved the process! I found it super relaxing to knit and would do it while watching TV at night or while driving. My knitting wasn’t perfect, but its my first project so I was kind to myself. Plus the beauty of a full scarf with thick wool yarn is that it is very forgiving.
I felt super excited when I was all done and wanted to show you how it turned out! It was very satisfying to start with a ball of yarn and MAKE something! So are hand making any gifts this year?
