In December 2016, I was asked by a brand to make a video for Instagram. I had NO clue what I was doing, but I took the video with an iPhone and through much trial and error, I kind of figured it out. It was so frustrating and I had all sorts of stumbling blocks-
“why wasn’t there a tutorial out there for this?”
I had so many questions. “How do you post video without getting black lines on the video?” “Why can’t I upload a video to Instagram if it has certain music on it?” “What can I do if I don’t like the sound?”
I stopped doing video for awhile because it seemed like too much work. Then I was at a photo shoot one day and watched a photographer do a stop motion video and I knew that I had to copy her method! I went home and took some pictures and turned it into a video. It ended up being really popular and got over 2,500 views. At the time I was around 900 likes on each image so I was blown away at the engagement! Plus I was helping my readers- I was getting comments like “So beautiful! Definitely getting some ideas from this.” “So inspiring! I’m off to practice!” I was onto something!!!
I tested different types of videos and learned little tricks to perfect them and streamline the process. I was hooked- not only were videos fun to make, but my audience loved them too!
And then something interesting happened- brands started to see my videos and loved them. They wanted me to create videos with their products featured. I was making money off sponsored Instagram posts, and because I had more to bring to the table, I could charge a higher rate. Now I have the chance to work with brands that I would have never dreamed I’d have the opportunity to collaborate with! And its all because of video.
