I used to never read non-fiction. Never. For me, it was all about escaping into the story and I would read right before going to bed- bliss. But now, I can’t get enough of non-fiction! I love learning and being inspired. When I had my baby, I all of the sudden was spending tons of time on my phone/tablet with the middle of the night and around the clock feedings. I grew a love for Kindle books as I felt much more fulfilled from reading than surfing the web. I have found some amazing books that I believe would help anyone who is creative for work or just for fun.
For my job, I drive a lot. I developed a love for podcasts because I can learn and be inspired while driving. I’ve collected some great resources and thought I would pass them on!
Books to Read if you are a creative:
You are a Bada** (click the photo to see on Amazon)*
This on is my absolute favorite! I’ve read it twice and feel like I can conquer the world when I am done. I listened to a podcast with The Alison Show where she recommended this book because it helped her build her empire, so I knew I had to have it. This book 100% inspired my creating this podcast- it really is an empowering book. I can’t recommend it enough!
To be fair, I only just started listening to this on Audible, but I am loving it! It goes over following your creativity and your inspiration and how to live your life while being creative and living a whole life. This is my first time trying Audible and I am loving hearing the author reading it. I’ve played it while making dinner and playing with my baby. Listening about how you can live with your fear while making your dreams come true? Priceless.
Do The Work*
This is a great book to read if you are conquering a big creative project. It takes you step by step through the process and helps you through inevitable roadblocks.
Podcasts to Listen to if you are Creative
I have listened to a lot of podcasts in my day. What I love about them is you can learn about a very niche topic that you love. As opposed to the radio where you are held captive to whatever they want you to listen to. Plus, they’re free. Here are my favorite podcasts to listen to if you are creative:
The Accidental Creative This one is specifically made for working creatives (designers, writers, any job where you have to create on demand every day). It is soooo good! The host interviews other authors with specific tips on how to churn out quality work. He also shares his own tips. This one is worth your time.
Big Magic This is the podcast Elizabeth Gilbert put out as a pre-courser to her book Big Magic (that I link to above). She gives “magic lessons” to 5 women who are stuck in their creative life. Listen from start to beginning. She also talks to other authors and influencers about tips for the women. The last episode with Brene Brown is seriously life changing. I’ve listened to just that episode 3 times.
I hope these are helpful for you! I hope they offer a resource for how you can have a more creative life.
