Last fall, I went to work on updating my kitchen from a dated and dreary space to my dream kitchen. One of the things I really considered in the design was color. I started with the sink and then coordinated the fridge and stove. Color in a kitchen can be scary, so I thought I’d give you some tips for bringing it into your space to add more personality and fun.
Thank you to Glad for sponsoring this post. All opinions are my own
A few months ago, I partnered with Glad and HGTV Magazine to share my kitchen in the May issue of HGTV Magazine!
I was so excited about the opportunity, especially since the style goes perfectly with their Beachside Breeze Scented Kitchen ForceFlexPlus Bags. The HGTV Magazine issue goes on sale on April 6th!!!
These bags smell amazing (they’re scented with Febreze)- plus, how fun is the blue shade?!
10 Tips for Bringing Color to your Kitchen
To celebrate the lifestyle ad that is out today, I wanted to give you some tips for bringing color to your kitchen.
1. have fun with functional decor
I have open shelving where I hold colorful cookbooks and pretty dishes in the corner between my stove and cabinets. They add a pop to the place and aren’t a big commitment color-wise.
If I ever tire of them, I could rearrange the items to not be in rainbow order or change out what is on display. It’s an easy way to test out living with color!
Side note, if you are wondering where anything came from in this room, I have all the kitchen sources listed on this blog post.
2. paint is a safe way to add color in a kitchen
The lower cabinets in my kitchen are painted a soft pink (Cupcake Pink by Behr if you’re wondering the exact hue). The sweet blush balances out all the blue. If I ever tire of them, I can easily paint them a fresh hue in a few hours.
Paint is inexpensive and easy to apply. I chose to paint just the lower cabinets pink so they’re less overwhelming.
3. balance out the room with white
Although my kitchen has fun colors and patterns, the subway tile, upper cabinets, and countertops are all white which gives a nice neutral foundation.
Lots of hues can act like a neutral- black, gray, beige or soft blue would all work. I could argue that the pink on the door and cabinets is a neutral too! The white in my kitchen gives the eye a break- not everything needs to be a focal point.
4. try out colorful appliances
Colorful appliances bring in a retro 1950s vibe. They feel perfect for my house since it was built in the 50s.
Paler shades can be easier to live with long term.
I don’t know when someone decided that all appliances should be stainless steel, white, or black, but this is a great place to have fun!
If new appliances aren’t in the budget, you can try painting your fridge or add car vinyl to a stove to give it a budget-friendly dose of color.
5. Use color in an unexpected place
Do you spy the mint sink?! It works perfectly with the appliances and is a fun surprise!
I’ve done a gray sink in the past, too (I might not be a fan of stainless steel ). For that kitchen, I didn’t want to do a huge renovation. We kept the cabinets and countertops and just changed out the drop-in sink. It took less than an hour and upgraded the whole room!
6. pick a pattern to pull the space together
A pattern on a rug, flooring, or wallpaper is a great way to make the whole room feel united.
My peel and stick flooring has a fun floral pattern with flowers, and there are touches of mint green echoed in the other decor. The art also has the same tones of the room to create a cohesive palette!
7. Be consistent with the accessories
The kitchen shows off my vintage Lenox Village collection. Since it’s the same collection across the room, it feels pulled together. And it repeats the same pastel tones. It tells a consistent story to help the flow.
8. Pay attention to the metal
In this space, I used a mix of chrome on the appliances and brass everywhere else. They balance each other out since one is warm and the other is cool.
9. Don’t be afraid to mix it up
Get a monochromatic look by using a few shades of one hue. This creates interest while not being overwhelming.
For example, the dining chairs are a darker pink than the cabinets. Since they’re just a deeper version, they play well together. The turquoise appliances also work with the lighter sink in a similar way.
10. It’s all about the little details
Thoughtful and beautiful spaces are so great to be in- it’s really the details that make them shine!
Even your garbage bags can coordinate! These Beachside Breeze Glad garbage bags are a soft shade of blue, and the scent means the kitchen feels fresh to all the senses.
I love the idea that a colored bag of trash would be a fun little surprise at a get-together.
So there you have it! Some tips for bringing color to a kitchen. Which one would you like to try out?
