OK Guys, let’s be honest. Last weekend I started to strip my stairs of the wallpaper and polyurethane and now I’m a little stalled with that project. Why? I should probably buy more of the stripping gel and finish up, but I don’t want to (insert laughing crying emoji)! It is so much work and it stinks (literally- those “safe” chemicals stink) and then I need to sand. Pretty much, there are so many steps between now and pretty. And I am not 100% convinced that it’s going to turn out. Plus I haven’t had time to even go price out a runner, so it’s on the back burner (even though all of the tools are out and my entry is a huge mess…) And what am I doing instead? I present you hallway plans and dreams.
I’ve read a few blogs recently about spicing up your hallway (Addison’s Wonderland and Young House Love) and I thought- Hey! I have a boring hallway! Maybe it’s time to think about that section of my house. I mean, the living room is looking pretty nice (to me at least :)) and the hallway is just an extension of the living room, so why not? So I present you the “before” of my hallway (it was originally shared here a few months ago. If you want to see a video of that space, check out this link)

The instructions for making this Instagram wall hanging can be found here
It is super narrow (too narrow for furniture), has a bit of art, a boob light, and is so boring I could cry. “So, Ashley,” you say “how are you going to spice it up?!” Good question reader. Here is my plan- first off, add chair molding. I will continue what is in the living room. I will need a little over 14′ for this project and the trim will cost about $16 #budgetwin I might add the picture molding above the railing to match with the living room. I did a rough estimate and that would cost $30.
I will paint the top 2/3 of the wall the same white that is in the living room– hopefully making it feel less like a cave of grey and brown sadness. I already have the paint on hand, so it’s free #doublebudgetwin plus, I only have to paint the top 2/3 of the wall!! Anyone can get excited about less cutting out, am I right?!
Next, I will wallpaper the bottom 1/3 of the hall in this wallpaper. I found it on Amazon using the tricks for finding wallpaper you love on a budget that I posted here. I am SO excited about this!!! I have loved the birch black and white wallpaper FOREVER and finding it in my price range, it feels so good. I’ve debated putting it on the whole wall, but I am worried it will be too much. I’ve also thought about putting it on the top 2/3 of the wall, but that is where the art is so that would be very busy… If I only do the bottom 1/3 of the wall in the hall I’m pretty sure I can get away with only doing one double roll of wallpaper. At $40, this is still looking good for my wallet!
Last, I will change out the boob light for something pretty. Lowes has some good options for $40-$80. That’s probably as far as I will get for now. So $16 for chair railing, paint I have on hand, $40 for wallpaper, and $40-$80 for a light- not too shabby!
Eventually, when we change out the carpet for hardwood, I would love to do a fun pattern in the wood down the hall. Is that not just gorgeous?!
Or simply just add wood floors (in an easy to lay pattern) and a runner. A Persian runner please 🙂
What do you think? Should I break out my paint brush RIGHT NOW?! Haha, I’ll let you know how it goes #tempted
