Today is day two of the 25 days of DIY! For today, I’ll be sharing a tutorial for how to paint stripes. I got the projects by asking my Instagram followers what they wanted to learn. Then I found places in my house where I could implement them. For this project, I decided it’d be perfect in my butler’s pantry. This is a weird little hallway with cabinets between my kitchen and bathroom.

step one-
If your wall isn’t one of the colors of the stripes you want, begin with painting your wall with one of the stripe colors. I choose white (Behr Ultra Pure White in satin).
STEP TWO-
Decide on the size of stripes you want. I wanted to do three different sizes of stripes- white 1.5″ stripes, pink 2″ stripes, and yellow 1/2″ stripes. Here is my inspiration image for the stripes.
Make on the wall where your stripes will go with a ruler and pencil. Since I’m doing three colors, I used P for where the pink stripes will be and Y for where the yellow stripes will be.
NOTE- if I was to do this again, I’d change the white stripes to 1.88″ wide so they’d be the same width as the painter’s tape. That way I’d only have to tape once.
STEP THREE-
Use a level and a pencil and make level lines where you put the registration marks in your last steps. I started with the pink stripes. Place painter’s tape on the outside of those lines. Make sure you position your tape so you paint over the pencil marks.
step four-
Use your base color of paint and paint along the tape edge. My base color is white, so I used the white paint and painted it along the tape edge where the pink paint will go. This makes it so that if paint bleeds, it’ll be the white and not the pink. THIS IS THE KEY to perfect stripes! Sorry to yell, but this one “extra step” is worth every second!
step five-
Use a roller to paint your stripes. This is where all of your hard work pays off! Pull off the tape while your paint is still wet, this’ll ensure the paint job is as crisp as possible. For this step, I used Beloved Pink in satin
step six-
If you’re going to paint three stripe colors, repeat steps 1-5. This is where I added the golden color- Rice Curry by Behr in satin.
step seven-
Use your base color (for me, the white) and paint any small bleeds that might have occurred. Paying attention to these details makes DIY projects look professional. And then you’re done!

I wanted the small stripes to look gold and with the texture in the wall, I think it worked! It’s just a latex paint. It matches nicely with the colors in the adjoining bathroom.
Now its time to step back and enjoy! My husband came inside when I was done and he said these stripes reminded him of Disneyland. I told him there is no greater compliment- lol! I’m loving the stripes and I hope this tutorial was helpful in case you want to tackle them too. Here’s another post on painting stripes when I did thick 12″ ones on my patio.
