Florida Update

I’ve been meaning to write a post on how we have been liking Florida since we moved here in mid-January. I still get questions about how we’re liking it. I also get lots of questions about our favorite family activities so I’ve included some of those too. The move from Utah to Florida was a big one so I thought I’d dive in and share all about it today!

My husband and I have been married 10.5 years and for the last 9, we lived in the same condo. We loved that place, but we were itching for a change. Winter is not fun in Utah (for us, at least)- there’s snow and because of the way Salt Lake is shaped with the mountains on one side and the lake on the other, it traps in bad air. DIY A-Frame Play House

When I was little, I always wanted a playhouse. Did anyone else watch Now and Then and just lust after their dreamy tree house?! Well- I did! It was pink and classic and big enough for sleepovers- sigh! Here’s a glimpse of it:

As any well-meaning parent would do, I decided that Don needs a playhouse since I never had one. We’ve never had the space, until recently. Since we now have a backyard (!!!) I decided that it was finally time- Don would get his own playhouse!

DIY Play Kitchen Roundup

Well hello there! This morning I had a post planned and it just didn’t work out. Ugh! I did a project that didn’t turn out. So instead I decided to make this week “kids play DIY inspiration.” I’m revealing Don’s new A-Frame playhouse this week so you’ll get a lot of fun stuff to go with this. I’ve had this post planned for awhile so today is the perfect day to share it!

Two years ago, I made my son a play kitchen and he has adored it! And honestly, I had a fun time making it too! It cost less than $70 to make so it was pretty affordable. It was made from an old TV cabinet that I found at a thrift shop. The back splash is made from peel and stick tile that I cut into smaller pieces to look like subway tile.

The mini kitchenette has since become one of the most popular blog posts I’ve ever written.

Teaching Your Toddler Independent Play

Guys I am a busy mom. I COUNT on Don to be able to play alone so that I can get a few things done each day. When I learned that my encouraging him to play by himself was good for him, I was thrilled. Is that not the best win win situation ever?! I wanted to tell you why its so beneficial and give you some tips on teaching your toddler independent play.

Let’s start with a quote from Dr. Sheila Anderson, Assistant Professor in Early Childhood Education at Weber State University. She says that during independent play,

Children freely express feelings and ideas, exercise imagination, and feel the joy of self-discovery.” She goes on to explain that, “This fosters creativity. As they plan and carry out their own ideas, confidence emerges, as well as the ability to sustain attention, and persist in problem solving.”

So independent play (whenever a child plays on their own) builds creativity, imagination, talents, and helps a child develop a sense of who they are. It teaches self reliance and problem solving.
