I’ve been having the best time slowly putting my bedroom together. I’ve been looking for unique decor items when my friend Laurel from The House that DIY Built messaged me asking if I wanted a parrot she had inherited from her grandma. I immediately said yes! It’s perfect! Here’s how the vintage hanging parrot looks in my room, some inspiration images, and where you can buy one.
vintage hanging parrot
Here’s the cute little parrot. He was originally colorful, and had later been painted white. There were some cracks that I ended up filling with wood filler. I actually liked the white so I gave it a fresh coat of spray paint.
Before he was fixed, I held up him up in front of the scarf I ended up framing. I figured the floral scarf would be the perfect colorful background!

Here’s how the bird ended up looking. I love the touch of whimsey!
The parrot is playful and I think it’s the tropical touch in here.
I put a cup hook into the shiplap ceiling and then attached brass chain leftover from a chandelier so the parrot hangs over the dresser. If this was a drywall ceiling, I would have used a more heavy duty ceiling hook.
I love how the parrot looks next to the chinoiserie mural!

Inspiration
The below Mario Buatta image is the reason I wanted a hanging parrot in the first place!
Mario Buatta is a designer who died in 2018. He was called “the Prince of Chintz” for his use of small patterned floral. I’ve been learning about him and have been really inspired! His look directly is influencing the current trend of Grand Millennial. His decorating book is on my wishlist.
After his passing, Mario Buatta’s estate was auctioned off. It made $7.6 MILLION dollars! The above picture is from the epic auction. See the parrots in the corners in front of the mural? Gorgeous!
Here’s a few more inspiration images and a close up of the above parrots.

where to buy a vintage hanging parrot
I love decorating with vintage items because they add instant interest and soul to a room. From what I can tell, the below parrots are originally from Mexico and were purchased as souvenirs. Luckily, some are pretty affordable. The colorful paint and folk art feel are so charming.
vintage brass parrot

While looking for vintage hanging parrots, I found the most beautiful vintage brass and copper versions by Mexican artist Sergio Bustamante. These are very expensive. They range from $500-$4000! So if you spot one in a thrift shop, buy it! I think the brass and whimsical details makes these absolutely gorgeous!
I even found an original 1978 ad from Bloomingdales when they carried Sergio Bustamante’s sculptures. It’s a little hard to read, but the parrot sold for $775 new! And was only created as a limited edition of 100. No wonder they’ve held their value.
If you’ve ever been to Disneyland or Disney World and gone into the Tiki Room, you’ll remember all the hanging parrots singing. Now I love my bird even more!
OK, so there’s all the information I could find on these. I hope you enjoyed obsessing about these with me. One of my favorite things is doing research on old items so this was really fun for me. Here’s to us all creating our own Tiki Rooms!
