This is the front of my house- charming right?! Lol! So it needs some help. The fact that my mailbox got hit by a delivery truck a few months doesn’t help. I’m planning lots of projects outside this summer. First up, a new mailbox!
I’m excited to get this house some much needed curb appeal! If you have an old, basic mailbox like I do, here’s how to easily upgrade it.
how to install a new mailbox SUPPLIES
- mailbox
- shovel
step 1- get your post where you want it
First up, we decided to move the post so it is further from the curb and our driveway in hopes that we can avoid another accident. We found that the post had been cemented in a bucket and buried. This made moving our post easy. We simply dug a new hole and relocated the post.
A quick note- you’ll want to make sure your mailbox is placed in the correct location according to the US Postal Service requirements. Those currently state that the bottom of the mailbox should be 41″-45″ above the road. And that the mailbox post should be 6″-8″ from the curb. Put your house or apartment number on the mailbox.
If you’re upgrading your mailbox, you can probably reuse your original post. If you’re adding a new mailbox, you’ll need to cement your post into the ground or you can use this no dig mounting system.
step 2
Next, we simply put the new post over the old post. It fit like a glove!
Then we attached the flower box, mailbox, and newspaper to the post. And by “we,” I mean my husband! I was weeding while this happened, so I definitely feel like I contributed- lol!
Here’s how the mailbox was looking at this point. Is that not the prettiest mailbox you’ve ever seen?! I just needed to add flowers!
after
I planted some pansies in the flower box and they look so happy! They should bloom all summer! One of my favorite parts of this makeover is that we fixed the Little Library! Shortly after finishing it a few months ago, it was blown over in a massive wind storm and one of the doors was smashed. It feels so good to get it repaired and outside where it belongs again.
Every time I drive up to my house I get a big smile because I loooove the mailbox! It’s from Grandin Road and it’s exactly what this space needed. One day we’re hoping to do a picket fence outside and add lighting. The big bush in front of our house will bloom lilacs in a few months. But even while we’re waiting for those things, I’m SO happy with how it looks now!
Here’s a quick before and after for you! What do you think? Wasn’t this project a fun way to amp up the curb appeal out here?!
