one room challenge kitchen mood board
Let’s start with the kitchen side! This is the side of the room with the cabinets, fridge, and sink. First of all, here’s the mood board-
Sources- light / subway tile / art / rainbow wallpaper- available soon / faucet / fridge / cabinet fronts / hex tile / inspiration image
The look I’m going for is light and bright with soft accents of color. I want a traditional feel while still being fun and not so serious.
The kitchen side of the room will have one wall completely tiled in white subway tile and that’ll be the backsplash too. I just adore subway tile because it works with the history of the house and it will reflect light. If you remember, everything I am selecting needs to be in line with my goals I listed in this post or to be pretty ;). The subway tile is both!

The ceiling height is the kitchen is tall- over 9′. The issue is that I want the cabinets to go to the ceiling- I just hate open space on top of cabinets, they’re dust magnets you know? But when measuring everything out, they seemed too high all the way up.
So, the compromise is to put an open shelf below the cabinets. Like in the inspiration image above. It’s the perfect answer because that means I get some decorative space that’s pretty and functional! #winning
And you know what I’m going to line the back of the shelf with? Custom rainbow striped wallpaper that perfectly coordinates with my rainbow stairs! I designed this and it’ll be sold on Spoonflower soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m a little excited- lol! Finally my favorite pastel rainbow colors will be in a wallpaper! How cool is that?!
Let’s talk about this pink fridge! It’s another element of the kitchen I’m so jazzed for! I LOVE colorful appliances and Samsung recently came out with their Bespoke design line where you can customize the fridge color. It’ll be perfect for the space.
I own and love Samsung appliances so being able to be one of the first to have their Bespoke line in my house is a pinch me moment! Especially because it’ll be PINK!
The cabinets are going to be all white. I love a splash of color on cabinets (remember my pink cabinets?!), but with this dark space, I want to go a soft white to lighten up the room as much as possible. Plus with the colorful wallpaper and appliances, I promise it won’t be boring.
I adore Ikea cabinets, so I’ll be using the boxes again (though I do need to do a post on how to track them down- Ikea is out of stock on so many items right now).
Instead of doing IKEA cabinet doors, I’ll be using Nieu Cabinet doors in the Angela Rose Slim Shaker Detail style door in the color Winter White. These are high end doors that really elevate an Ikea kitchen while still being affordable. I can’t wait to share more about these and show them off when they arrive!
The last element I want to show you on this side of the room is the custom hex design I’ll be doing above the oven. I ordered hex tiles from The Tile Shop in pink, blue, mint, white, and sand and will be creating a focal point above the stove.
dining room mood board
The other side of the room is the dining room. A big table, cozy fireplace, traditional styling with hints of modern. Sounds beautiful to me!
Sources- chandelier / art- no longer available / mirror / Staffordshire dogs / table / fireplace- similar / chinoiserie wallpaper / captain chair / side chair / inspiration image
The chandelier I’ll be using in here is modern, brass, with led lights. I LOVE modern lights with traditional everything else. To me, it helps it feel current and fresh. This light is from Kichler. We’ll be switching out the fan we used to have for this beauty.
Since I’m going for a Palm Beach chic look (even though the house is in Utah), I needed something pagoda shaped. I love this white mirror and think it’ll look beautiful over the fireplace. Plus it’ll reflect light into the darkest corner of the room.
I am excited because I’ll be featuring a lot of items from eBay in the room! From the mirror above to the chairs (I’m hoping to find the perfect Chippendale style) to the fireplace to the hardware and accessories, the room will be full of items found on eBay.
I’m super excited about this because I’ll be able to use lots of vintage items to add some much needed character and interest to the kitchen. I love how antiques add a layer of depth to a room! There will be lots of new items (like the fireplace and mirror) since eBay has a great variety of both old and new.
I’ve been searching for some pretty items to be able to set the perfect table. And white serving dishes to display on the open shelving. I’m dreaming about starting a collection of pink ginger jars for the dining table. Plus, wouldn’t a pair of Staffordshire dogs that look like my pup be adorable on the fireplace?!
I’ll make sure to update the blog and my Instagram with my eBay latest finds was they start arriving!
The dining table will be a neutral wood color to warm up the room. The table is from Apt2b and I’m so excited to be able to hold 6-8 people at our dining table! In the past we’ve only been able to have 4 people at our tiny table, so this feels like a huge improvement!
There will be a Chinoiserie mural on two walls of the kitchen- the fireplace wall and the stairs wall. The wallpaper is from Calico Corners. I love the roses and birds on the trees! I’ve been obsessed with chinoiserie wallpaper for a few years so I’m excited to bring it into this room.
demo so far
Now that you know the plan, here’s what my kitchen looks like right now. Warning- it’s scary!
We’re down to the studs and are so close to starting to add new things back in! First we have to have an electrician and plumber in here. There’s lots of new homes being built in my town so it’s slow finding someone. But we will make this something special!
Can you squint and imagine that fan being a chandelier and a big table under it next to the stairs?! I can!
This is the window where the sink will go. To the right of it will be the new fridge. There will be a shiplap ceiling and pretty trim and I just can’t wait for it to look like something other than a mess!

Thanks Eleanor! That’s really kind of you. There’s no way I could afford to do the kitchen without the gifted items. I’m still keeping track of all costs so I can do a big run down at the end of our out of pocket costs and the gifted stuff so I can share all of that.

Thanks Maggie! I did the best I could with the cosmetic changes and am so proud of it. But there’s only so much you can do with paint. I’m so, so excited for better functioning cabinets, dishwasher, and a big table! I can’t wait!
