I’ve been working on my office and it was finally time to tackle the elephant in the room- the towel I had hanging in the window. You can see it in this picture- I’d push it over every morning to let the light in- lol.
When we first moved in, I hung up white sheer drapes. I love them, but we need more privacy at night on the front window that looks out at the busy street. The solution? A roller shade.
WHAT IS A ROLLER SHADE
So what is a roller shade? They are exactly what they sound like. A roller shade has a rolling mechanism with a length of fabric attached to it. When it is fully raised, the material rolls up into a tube, making only the tube visible. These are perfect for a minimalistic look or for using with drapery for privacy.
They are exactly what I needed! I have the decoration I need with the pom pom sheers. I just needed privacy that will completely open up during the day and let allllll the light in. Here’s the roller shade I picked out-
roller shade in my office
My husband hung the roller shade in my office and I love it!!! The kind I got doesn’t have a long cord (which is good since those can be a choking hazard for kids). It just has a short string in the middle to pull the shade up and down.
It is really hard to get a good picture of with the sun shining through the window (sorry!). But also, part of the point of a shade is that it disappears when open! There is no visual weight so you can focus on other prettier things. Because not everything has to be a focal point. A roller shade can be all about function!
I love the window shade I got- especially since it’s affordable (mine was $50 but it depends on the size). Plus they are available in a HUGE variety of sizes and come with prime shipping.
ROLLER SHADE ROUND UP
Here are my favorite roller shades that I found while shopping for the super basic option that I got.
1 White Scalloped Roller Shade / 2 Lemon Roller Shade / 3 Woven Natural Roller Shade / 4 Pink Floral Roller Shade / 5 White Classic Roller Shade / 6 Grey Roller Shade / 7 Cabana Stripe Sand Roller Shade / 8 Black Roller Shade / 9 Peaks Modern White and Grey Shade /
Also, I think we should take a moment of silence for the lemon pattern. It’s so good! I asked my Instagram followers what color of roller shade they’d buy and the most popular was white, then grey, black, and natural. I also love the textured options.
OK- what do you think? Did I sell you on roller shades? We had them in our Florida house and I paired them with drapes and was really happy with that combination. Again, you can’t see them in this picture, but they’re there! They provide no distraction in the room, but at night you can pull them down for privacy.

I love roller shades! We moved into a 1940’s house last year, and they go so much better with the old windows than the plantation blinds the previous homeowner left. I am going room by room, and using the scalloped-edge one from JC Penney (#1 on your list). Love the way I can roll them all the way up and look out my beautiful old windows!
