before
When you first walked in, you entered into a small dining room. Everything was super yellow with linoleum floors. But see those cove ceilings?! Cute!!!
Between the dining room and kitchen was an arched ceiling
Once in the kitchen, you can see that the lowers were a little strange. No dishwasher, and no cabinets on the right side. Plus the fridge there really closed off the space. And again- so much yellow!!!
Here’s the view looking the other way. It was a very closed off layout with the wall running the whole way down. Ready to see how it looks now?!
Blue and White Classic Kitchen Reveal
Oh my gosh- could you cry?! Here’s the new dining room! Goodbye yellow, hello blue and white! To allow for more kitchen storage, the arch was removed from between the kitchen and dining room. Banquet seating was added to maximize seating. Is this not the coziest view you ever saw?! It feels like an English cottage. Why yes, I’d love to sit here and have tea!
Moving into the kitchen, you can see that we tore down the wall between the living room and the kitchen to allow for a more modern great room! Plus, there’s now space for a peninsula. It’s the perfect space for homework and breakfast. This is definitely the center of the home now!
Looking into the kitchen, you can that we added a dishwasher on the left side. On the right, we switched the fridge and the stove to open up the sight line. The peninsula and fridge storage adds way more function on this wall. We kept the vintage upper cabinets on the left side and spice cabinet (straight ahead) as they were perfect for in here.
Here’s the view looking into the dining room. You can see how pulling down the walls really opened the space. And now there’s so much more natural light from the living room windows!
dining nook
I thought we could go though each part of the kitchen and talk about the different elements that made the space! First up, the dining nook!
The chandelier is from Kichler lighting (it’s the Hayman Bay 5 light Chandelier) and when it went in, 100% made this space! I love how it grounds the space and makes it feel really special. I think the antique white finish is so beautiful- I couldn’t imagine a more perfect light for in here. At night, the glow from it is so cozy and this is the perfect dinner spot!
The wallpaper is Ralph Lauren- it’s the Vintage Dauphine wallpaper in Porcelain. I couldn’t love this paper more! It’s feminine, classic, and gorgeous. If you want similar blue and white wallpaper, I have a round up of similar wallpapers here. Since this room has cove ceilings, we mounted the crown molding a little low to show off that feature. The cushions were custom made by a local upholstery shop in Salt Lake (Zion Upholstery). It was made in this P Kauffman Buffalo Check fabric (the Lagoon color). This fabric is similar, but more affordable. There’s a zipper on the cushion so that they can be easily removed to be cleaned. This is the Hearth and Hand Tassel pillow.
I really love mixing high and low end product. The table was custom made and has been in my brother-in-law’s family. We stripped off the paint for this natural finish (tutorial here). The faux flower arrangement was a $6 thrift store find and is beyond perfect for here! The banquette seating is an IKEA hack that’ll I’ll share a tutorial on soon!
The rest of the pillows are also from Target, the large square one is from the Hearth and Hand line and here’s the link to the smaller ones.
The chair we used for in here is this Home Pop tufted chair. The neutral fabric is exactly what was needed against the wallpaper and buffalo check seat cushions. We only have one chair in here because it’s a little tight with two. But more chairs can be added for a dinner party or when guests are over.
peninsula
Ok, let’s chat about the peninsula! The stone is a white quartz that we bought from IKEA with a 12″ overhang (the longest they suggest). It’s perfect for eating or working. The base is made from standard IKEA cabinets. We painted all of the cabinets Blue Ice by Benjamin Moore with a Wagner FLEXiO 5000 sprayer to unite the old and the new cabinets. Here’s the post with the sprayer painting tutorial.
For seating, I choose two bar stools from HomePop. The subtle stripe is so perfect for in here and I love the texture of the fabric! Having a back on barstools is so nice with young kids (my sister has 2 elementary age kids). Plus these are super comfy!
For flooring in this room, my sister choose vinyl flooring in the Woodland color.
Over the peninsula, we have two Pendant lights from Kichler for lighting. These are the Everly Bell Pendant in natural brass. The glass helps them be not some obstructive while the brass gives beautiful decoration. In a kitchen and dining room, I like to use lighting to designate different zones. These add beautiful ambiance at night. Lighting makes such a difference when done correctly!
These little houses were thrift store finds from my sister. I love them! I used a pitcher to hold fresh flowers.
kitchen
Looking into the kitchen, you can see the beautiful cabinets. The bases are all new- the boxes are from IKEA and the door fronts are from SemiHandmade. We went with the paintable shaker doors since they work well with the upper cabinets. Here’s a blog post with tips on how to design an IKEA kitchen. And this post goes over if an IKEA kitchen is worth it.
The farmhouse sink is from Elkay! This sink is my dream come true. Have you ever seen a prettier one?! I’ll have a whole blog post up soon that goes over how to install a farmhouse sink with IKEA cabinets. We skirted the base of the sink for that cottage look and also because the wrong size of doors were ordered- oops! The bridge faucet is another affordable find. That polished brass is SO pretty in here! Most of the accessories like that blue and white bowl and brass vase are thrift store finds. The plant is in a pot that I DIY’d- more on that in another post!
For the lighting in the kitchen, we went with the Alton Flush Mount in Brass. It has seeded glass and the brass is stunning. Again, the glass helps it disappear while the brass acts like jewelry in the kitchen. If you need a light that is pretty while having a small profile (you can put this on short ceilings), I 100% suggest this light. I’ve used it in my home twice and adore it! For the kitchen hardware, we used the Franklin Brass Pulls. For the lowers we used the 5″ size and the uppers are the 3″ size (so they would fit in the holes from the old hardware). The 3″ pulls are less than $3 each! That’s such a good deal for this high end class look!
The gas stove is now such a pretty focal point! Over it we hung this wood hood that is painted blue to match the cabinets. The backsplash is a herringbone pattern and looks so gorgeous! For the backsplash, we did plain subway tile. There’s so much going on with this kitchen that sometimes it’s nice to let some elements take a backseat and be a supporting character. Plus it’s so classic! And affordable! It’s only $1 per piece. Subway tile will never go out of style (in my opinion). That cat is a thift store find and the landscape art is from Minted.
Here’s another look at the subway tile. We used white grout for a clean look. The backsplash didn’t used to have any outlets so that’s a nice update! The blue Charlotte art is from Minted and the recipe art is a custom piece- it’s my Grandma’s recipe in her hand writing! You can order it here. Here’s the link to the pink flowers and tray.OK! I think that’s the whole kitchen reveal! I’ll put links to everything in the kitchen below. Let’s look at some before and afters first though!
