When you first walk into our house you see a big huge TV. I’m a TV lover, so that was fine with me, but I did want to help it blend in a bit. When I saw Sugar and Cloth’s office storage I decided that It’d be perfect to convert into a media cabinet for below my TV and I love the idea of adding a bunch of fun color (and storage) to my house!
before
Here is what the house looked like before we moved in:
This is when it was empty on our move-in day:
And then, here is what it looked like when we got most of the furniture in:
Today, it is looking more like this:
Yay!!! Let’s back up a second and I’ll share with you how we got there:
colorful cabinet diy
Supplies:
- Dixie Belle Chalk Paint- I used these colors: Soft Pink, Flamingo, Daisy, Mint Julep, Peacock, and Peony
- Dixie Belle Clear Coat in Satin
- Paint Brush
- Painter’s Tape
- IKEA Besta Cabinet ($235). Yep! This is a Besta Ikea hack! Below are the exact components I used:
- 1 Small Besta Frame
- 1 Large Besta Frame
- 3 Lappviken Doors– Note: I selected these doors because they have a matte finish and will accept the paint better and won’t scratch off as easily as a high gloss door
- 3 Besta Shelves
- 4 Packs of Stubbarp Legs
- 3 Packs of Besta Hinges
instructions
Step One- paint a little over half of your cabinet front your first color. Make sure to pay attention to where the hinge holes are on the back so your stripes will be going the correct way. Give it two coats to get full coverage.
Step Two- measure your door front and place painters tape down half way across. This part is important! Next, paint your first color. So if you painted pink, lay down the painters tape, then paint pink again. This will make for a flawless stripe! This makes it so that if you have any color bleeding, it’ll be the original color.
Step Three- paint two coats of your second color on the door front. Once the second coat is down, pull up your tape and you’ll have the most beautiful lines!
To finish off, make any touch ups that might be needed and let dry. Finish off with a clear coat to protect the paint.
after
Daisie Chair / Flower Pillow / Rug / Art / Planters / TV / Gold Tray / The New Bohemians Book / Clam Shell Bowl
So its a bit of a bold look (is that putting it mildly?!), but I LOVE it! This side of the room was a bit more neutral, but the colorful media cabinet really gives it some punch!
I know rainbows aren’t for everyone. My husband is so sweet for putting up with my crazy ideas (we joke that this is my Barbie dream house 😉 )! But I think any number of colors could be gorgeous. Wouldn’t a variety of blues be pretty?!
Anyway, for a media cabinet and the amount of storage we achieved, I think that this $250 ish project was super affordable! Hopefully you don’t think I’m crazy- lol! But you only live once, so your house might as well be decorated for you and what you love. Right?!

Very unique. Who doesn’t love an IKEA hack.
The colors fit in your space perfectly.
These would look awful in my house because I have a heavy brown and earth tone thing going on.
But I can just imagine this done with some browns/grays/greens.
Very nice. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Audrey! I’m glad you like it! I definitely think the beauty of this Ikea Hack is that you can do any color at all! I think you’re totally right that earth tones would be gorgeous!
