For the past few weeks, I’ve been slowly making over my hallway. It was boring and beige before- the last part of my house still unpainted. I’d changed out the light, but that was about it. So I redid it and I’m excited to share my colorful hall makeover!
BEFORE
Above is what it looked like before. Nothing too exciting- small with beige walls. The doors lead to the master bedroom, Don’s room, and the main bathroom. Our little house has a nice layout! Which is great because being under 900 square feet, you really need that. To the left (that you can’t see) is a hall closet with shelves and storage for cleaning supplies.
COLORFUL HALL MAKEOVER
I’m going to show you the makeover, but first I want to focus on the art I made for the wall! I really wanted to incorporate dried flowers since I love that trend. So I ordered some online and made my own art.
SUPPLIES
- Cap trim– cut to 10 pieces 5″ long and 10 pieces 7″ long
- Backer board- cut to 5 pieces of 5″x7″ pieces
- Plexi Glass 5″x7″- pack of 5
- Dried Flowers- purple, pink, yellow, white, blue
- Construction Adhesive
- Sawtooth picture hangers
step 1
Start by cutting the trim and backer board to size. I went with a 5″x7″ size. Honestly, if it’d been normal times and I could run to the thrift shop or IKEA, I would have bought frames. I planned on doing something cooler with these, but I couldn’t figure out how to execute my idea. So I made my own frames.
After everything was cut, I used construction adhesive to glue the molding to the Plexiglas to the wood backer that I had painted white. Inside, was the dried flowers I had bought on Amazon. You could also press your own.
Hint- less glue is better. If you use too much, it’ll seep out and get everywhere. Keep a wet q-tip or paper towel near by to clean up the glue. Construction adhesive holds super tight once dry, so use sparingly so you don’t have to clean it up.
step 2
Next, use wood filler to fill any seams in the picture frame. Once dry, sand off any extras.
step 3
And now, to really make those seams disappear, paint the wood filler white. I used an artist’s brush to just cover the wood filler.
step 4
Finally, finish up by attaching a sawtooth hanger to the back of the art. This was tricky to do- we ended up drilling a pilot hole and then nailing them in.
after
Here’s the hall with the doors painted different colors. I went with Cupcake pink on the bathroom door, Farmhouse green on Don’s door, and Sea glass blue on the master bedroom door. The bathroom door is latex paint and the other doors are chalk paint from Dixie Belle. I wanted to go with fun colors and I wanted to use what I had on hand.
Alright, I’m just going to say it. I really like how the hall came together. It’s so much better than before, but it’s not as show stopping as I’d like. In pictures, the colorful doors read as too much. But in person they’re fun (and never all closed at once).
I’m looking at this project not as a fail, but as a stepping stone. For example, I think pretty molding on each door would be great. Maybe a header above the doors. And definitely upgrade the handles. With more time, this’ll get there. For now, it’s a step in the right direction and that’s always a good thing.
What do you think? What would you change? Maybe the colorful doors are too much. It’s only paint so I can always change that. In person, these doors are usually open so they read as playful and not as crazy as these pictures look- lol.

Aww thanks so much Liz 💕

I don’t think they look crazy or too much. I love them! Being pastel, they aren’t as in your face as more vibrant doors might have been
Ashley Wilson says
You’re right, the pastels do make it easier on the eyes. Thank you Rachel! ❤️

I like it! Maybe a longer runner that had the muted colors of the doors

That’s a great idea!
