DIY Geometric Modern Planters

I’ve been wanting to add more plants to my house. Of course, I couldn’t have any old planters- I wanted to make mine own! I was inspired by some planters at Urban Outfitters, but I figured that I could make them for much cheaper! So here’s a tutorial for not one, but three DIY Geometric Modern Planters.

Planter 1-

Ceramic Pot
4 Wooden Dowels 1/2″ wide
Paint Colors- 1. Beloved Pink, 2. Shy Smile, 3. Ballet Rose 4. Coral Fountain, 4. Charismatic, 5. Corn Stalk, 6. Sparkling Brook, 7. Green Aqua, 8. Mirador, 9. Tinted Ice 10. Early September ,

Start by marking the dowel height based on the base planter height.

Start by marking the dowel height based on the base planter height. Then cut the dowels with a miter saw. 32 pieces are needed for this exact pot.
Prime the pot (so the glue adheres to the pot)
Sand off the rough edges on the dowel ends.
Paint the dowels. Here’s the paint colors I used- 1. Beloved Pink, 2. Shy Smile, 3. Ballet Rose 4. Coral Fountain, 4. Charismatic, 5. Corn Stalk, 6. Sparkling Brook, 7. Green Aqua, 8. Mirador, 9. Tinted Ice 10. Early September ,
Glue the dowels to the pot

Let the glue dry for 2 hours before moving the pot so the glue can completely set.

How stinking cute is this rainbow pot?! Yes, it was a lot of work to paint all of the little dowels. But that ombre of colors is so pretty!

Next is a really simple pot. Besides being really easy to make, the terra cotta plant is $1 so it’s affordable too!

Glue the split wood circles to the pot. Let dry for 2 hours.
Paint the pot. I did two coats of Beloved Pink.
Plant the pot. Note, this is a faux plant. To make it look a little more real, I used dirt to hold the fern in place.

And now for the DIY dupe from this Urban Outfitters stacked planter. Here’s how I made this one-

Paint the wood circles. For this planter, I used the color Mirador.

Plant the pot. Note, my orchid came in a plastic container. That fit perfectly inside the stacked wood rings.

tips for taking care of orchids

Now that I’ve shown you how to make those cute planters- all which would work for orchids- I thought I’d give some tips for taking care of orchids.

Water once a week. More can lead to root rot. Feel the soil before watering. If it’s wet, don’t water. Use a water meter to be certain
Place in a bright windowsill facing East or south. They need a lot of light, but indirect light
Feed weekly with fertilizer for orchids
Repot in fresh orchid potting mix when it stops blooming
Mist daily in dry climates- they like humidityFor the mister, I’m using the Centurion Mister Spray bottle. It’s really cool because you add batteries and then you get a continual mist without pumping anything. The nozzle can be adjusted from doing a fine mist to a straight stream. This would be great on other plants that like misted like ferns, palms, and begonias.
Note, make sure to mist in the morning. Plants don’t like to end the day moist.
Use a pot with drainage. They don’t like wet roots
60-75 degrees Fahrenheit with a little air circulation is the perfect atmosphere for orchids.
After they bloom and the flower has dried, prune it to stay healthy near the base of the stemTo prune my orchids, I’m using the Centurion Pruning Shears. They’re adjustable so they open wider for bigger hands and stay small for little hands (which is perfect for me). The blades are made from carbon steel. These stay sharper longer since they resist sap and friction.
Orchids should re bloom in 6-9 months
They can live for years in a healthy environment with proper care
