My kitchen countertop was a huge mess. Mostly because I bought herbs and never did anything with them. So I decided to make a fun project with them! I thought I’d use some items from the Dollar Store and see what I could create! I do love a good challenge. Here’s my Dollar Store DIY indoor herb garden
Dollar Store DIY Indoor Herb garden
Let’s start with the video tutorial so you get an overview on what I did. Then, I’ll dive in with more details below:
If the video doesn’t work here, you can watch it on YouTube here. I’d be over the moon happy if you subscribed to my YouTube channel! Videos are actually released on YouTube first (usually the night before they’re published on the blog). Thank you!
BEFORE
See- I told you it was a mess. Let’s fix that!
SUPPLIES
- Cricut Joy
- Smart Vinyl in 5 colors- light pink, coral, parchment, mint and light blue
- Metallic Leather in gold
- Black Joy Marker
- 4 Dollar Store teacups
- 2 Dollar Store wood flowers
- 4×4 cut to 24″ long
- Beloved Pink paint
- Spray Paint in White
step 1
First off, I made a plan for my project. I knew I wanted to have a shelf for 4 teacups and so 24″ was the perfect length- it worked for my countertop too.
I was going to build a box for my shelf, but then we had this leftover 4×4 piece of wood that was almost exactly 24″ long. That simplified things! So I sanded it down so it was nice and smooth.
step 2
Ok! This is the part I’m most excited about! Next, I drew lines on my wooden flowers. Then I used a reciprocating saw to cut two flowers so I have a total of 6 cut petals. I cut them into the shapes of ice cream cone shapes so that the I had a place to screw them onto the wood.
And yes, I did use that saw all by myself! First time too. Can you tell I’m proud of myself- lol.
Then I quickly spray painted my teacups white. I loved the shape on these, but they’d be much easier to use if they came white. So if you do this project, I’d suggest to buy the teacups white. It was really tricky to spray paint without paint dripping.
step 3
And now, it’s assembly time on the shelf. I took the ice cream cone shapes and drilled a pilot hole in them and on the back of the 4×4. Then I screwed them into the back. I used a little bit of construction adhesive to keep them in place.
I repeated this for all 6 of the scallops. It looked a little strange from the back-
But from the front it was adorable!!!
Isn’t this so fun that this is made from a scrap piece of wood and $2 in Dollar store flowers?! To finish the shelf off, I painted the whole thing a light pink.
step 4
To customize my project, I used my Circut Joy. First, I created labels made from leather. I hand cut them (the Joy doesn’t cut leather), but I did use the Joy to write words on the labels.
I also used the Joy to cut out stripes in 5 colors of vinyl. Can you guess what my plan is?!
step 5
Last, it’s assembly time! This was a lot of steps and it was exciting to the “make it pretty” step. So I took the stripes I cut on the Cricut and put them on my teacups.
And what did I get?! Rainbow teacups! the cutest little herb planters. I’m obviously obsessed with these.
Then I headed into my She Shed and started planting.
after
Ta da! Here’s my custom herb shelf! I think it’s adorable and the cutest indoor herb garden, but I wish the scallops were’t so covered up.
Now I have a little herb garden right in my kitchen! What’s your favorite part? I like the labels, but for me, it’s a tie between the scalloped shelves and the rainbow cups. I’d love to hear your thoughts! And if you have any ideas to not cover up the scallops.

Oh how cute!!!! 🙂 Ashley 🙂 this is sooo cute!! I’m in love with Cricuit Joy!! 🙂 of course the word joy 🙂 & it provides joy! 🙂 The precious lil white striped rainbow cups are the most lil adorable cups ever! The scallop stand is so sweet 🙂 If you’d like to show the scallops more ~ perhaps placing pretty lil white scalloped plates to the left & right of the stand ~ & place a cup in each. That way only 2 cups will be on the precious pink stand & you can enjoy the scallops! 🙂 We love the $1.store so too! All my pink & white silk flowers are from there for all year. The herb garden is So cute! 🙂

Hang the shelf upside down on the wall and put the tags other way around. You can place the cups on the counter and have a little shelf for the watering can or art. They will be easier to water (without getting your pretty pink shelf muddy) and easier to move to the sun for growth. 😊

Dear Ashley, that is a very pretty way to have a herb garden indoors. Although this is not related would you be kind enough to tell me the name of the wallpaper pattern so that I can find it for my bathroom? It appears to be exactly what I am looking for but I cannot find it here in Canada so far, so the maker will help me locate it! Thank you kindly and thanks very much for showing people that the most pedestrian objects that we use everyday can be beautiful at the same time. I made that a rule for myself as a single mom long ago and it works even on the pennies only spare money I had. Do enjoy the Snowbird experience staying healthy and safe. regards, Linda
