I am fully embracing the cottagecore decor trend, which means that I needed a kitchen lamp! When my friend Laurel from Wicker Picker Vintage found this lamp, I talked her into selling it to me—and I’ve been so excited to make it over! Anthropologie has a few lamps with bases covered in ceramic flowers, and I used those as my inspiration for this DIY lamp makeover.

Before of the thrift store lamp. Super cute, but I want to add more personality!
DIY Lamp Makeover

step 1- Make Air Dry Clay Bows
To start this DIY lamp makeover, I made a bunch of small bows from air dry clay. I used a silicone mold with bow shapes- just press the clay in, pull off any extra clay, pop it out, and let it dry overnight.

I estimated that I needed 85 bows but made 100 just to be safe. Three broke, and I didn’t end up needing 15, but it’s always better to have extras!

step 2- Paint the Lamp Base

While the bows were drying, I painted the base of the lamp with latex paint in Beloved Pink– the same color as my kitchen cabinets! Since the lamp will be in the kitchen, I think making it match will be fun. Craft paint would work too, but I wanted it to match perfectly.
If you like the color of you lamp, you can skip this step.
step 3- Paint and Seal the Bows

Once the bows were dry, I painted each one with soft pink gouache paint. It was tedious, but they turned out so cute!

After painting, I brushed on a thin layer of resin and cured them under a blue light.

This part was slow, but worth it- the resin made the bows look like shiny porcelain!

step 4- Make Over the Lampshade
The original shade was cute but had a dent, so I decided to cover it in wallpaper that matched my kitchen.

- First, I made a template by wrapping craft paper around the shade, trimming, and unfolding it flat.

- Then I traced the shape onto the wallpaper and cut it out.

- I used Elmer’s glue brushed on with a foam brush to attach the wallpaper to the shade.

- To finish, I hot glued pink bias tape around the top and bottom edges- it gives it such a polished look!

step 5- Attach the Bows

Finally, it was time to glue on the bows! I used E6000 glue on one half of each bow and hot glue on the other half.

The hot glue holds instantly, while the E6000 provides a long-term bond (but isn’t sticky immediately).

And that’s it! This DIY lamp makeover turned out so cute!

The bows make it feel so coquettish and sweet.

It glows beautifully in the kitchen, and the pattern on the shade ties in perfectly with the wallpaper in the room.
This thrift store lamp was fine before, but now it feels completely custom to my home- and I love it so much!
