I am gently dipping my toe into holiday decorating with this fun project today! For this year, I’m planning on 25 DIY Christmas crafts and this is the first one. I have SO many fun ideas that I can’t wait to share! Let’s start with DIY painted rainbow nutcrackers.
how to make DIY painted rainbow nutcrackers
Let’s start with the video tutorial so you get an overview on what I did. Then, I’ll dive in with more details below:
If the video doesn’t work here, you can watch it on YouTube here. P.s. I’m trying to build that page up, so if you’d subscribe, I’d really appreciate that!SUPPLIES
- Wooden nutcrackers. Most of mine are the $2.50 ones from Hobby Lobby. I also got a few of the $4.50 ones too. They are both 7 3/4″ tall. You can see if your Dollar Store has nutcrackers- mine didn’t. Amazon also has this set of wood nutcrackers.
- Paint. I used Beloved Pink, Ballet Rose, Lamplit, Country Weekend, Frosted Sage, and Watery
step 1
Start by removing the hair on the nutcrackers so you can paint them. This is the trickiest part of this project! Soak the hair with a mixture of white vinegar and hot water. Pull off the hair as the glue dissolves. Then use an exact-o knife to scape off the glue. It takes a little time, but comes off nicely.
step 2
Next, paint each of the nutcrackers. I just used a pot of sample latex paint and a paint brush. I did two coats on each nutcrackers to ensure full coverage. And that’s it! Easiest DIY ever!

Here they are! All lined up! I love how painting them makes them look so modern! Personally, I appreciate how the rainbow colors look together, but you could paint them any color!
I spent about $20 to buy the nutcrackers. Considering that that’s usually the price of 2, I’m happy with this project! What do you think? What color would you paint wooden nutcrackers?
