I wanted to make a fall wreath, but my supplies got canceled from Amazon. So I ran to Joann Fabric to see if I could find some dried florals. The pickings were slim, but I did spot some mini pumpkins covered in sweaters. I thought- those would be cute tie dyed! So I grabbed two packages for my tie dye fall pumpkin wreath.
They were on sale for 50% off, but that did meant I spent $25 on pumpkins. Pretty pricey! I later realized that I should just have bought a thrifted sweater and made my own. But these were quicker, so that was nice.
Tie Dye Fall Pumpkin Wreath
SUPPLIES
step 1
Start by soaking all of the pumpkins in water. This makes it so that the dye goes on lighter and bleeds across the pumpkins. It’s a softer and lighter look (which I love).
step 2
Next, put 1 teaspoon dye and 1 teaspoon water in a squirt bottle. Apply dye to the pumpkins unevenly. I think this gives it more of a tie dye look. While dying my pumpkins, I did it over a cookie sheet with a drying rack on top of it. That way the pumpkins didn’t sit in the dye.
If I accidentally put too much dye on a pumpkin, I’d dunk it back in the water and rinse some off. Note, water does remove the dye. Because of this, I’d be worried to put these on a porch without a roof or covering. It’d be sad if rain ruined the pretty dye.
To get the green color dye, I combined the teal and lemon yellow in the squirt bottle. This worked perfectly!
The only issue I had when dying my pumpkins is that the dye did not take to some areas and they were bright white. I figure that this is the glue used to put the sweaters on the pumpkins. Once the pumpkins were all done, it didn’t bug me, but it is a bit of an issue.
After dying both bags of pumpkins, I let them dry over night.
step 3
And now it’s time to take the wreath form and add the pumpkins. I thrifted an old wreath and removed the Valentine’s decorations. This wreath cost $2 and saved me at least $5 to reuse something and give it new life.
The grapevine wreath I used is 16″ round.
To attach the pumpkins to the wreath, I pushed through floral wire through the bottom of the sweater. Then I wrapped the wire onto the wreath. I’ve found that hot gluing larger objects like this doesn’t hold up to the elements- they’d just fall off. So wire is a much safer bet.
step 4
Finally, once the pumpkins were all wired on, I hot glued on some flowers in the gaps between the pumpkins. I also glued on some leaves. This really rounded out and filled in the design!

Ta da! And is my tie dye fall pumpkin wreath! I love how soft and pastel it turned out. I also think the flowers are a sweet touch.
The pumpkin sweaters are fun and add a lot of texture. I originally wanted pumpkins all around the wreath, but I don’t mind how this turned out. I think the grapevine wreath gave it some nice warmth and interest.
Tie Dye Home Decor
I obviously am loving the tie dye trend! I still wear my rainbow tie dye dress that I made in these same colors. So I decided to round up some tie dye home decor items if you’re into this look too.
1 table throw / 2 chair / 3 tie dye pouches / 4 curtains / 5 quilt / 6 desk pad / 7 napkin / 8 outdoor pillows / 9 rug / 10 pastel pillow / 11 pink pillow / 12 stool / 13 umbrella / 14 wall hanging / 15 shower curtain / 16 throw blanket / 17 soap / 18 bed set

So pretty. Love the composition and soft colors. And the exposed grapevine works better than if it were solid pumpkins.
