A few months ago, my dreams came true when my Big Chill appliances arrived! They’re retro inspired and come in over 200 colors. The styling is beautiful and feels straight out of 1950’s. Which is perfect for this 1951 house! Ever since I first started using these, I’ve gotten lots of questions on them. Do you like them? Are they worth it? Here’s my Big Chill Appliance review.
big chill appliance review
I love the idea of having appliances being a beautiful part of the kitchen. Lots of people are completely covering up their appliances now (which I love too), but what if they were focal points? What if they were the stars of the kitchen show?! I mean, why not? It’s what you use most in the kitchen. Might as well have cute ones.
fridge
For the fridge, I got the Retropolitan Fridge in Pastel Turquoise. I got this one instead of their more retro looking Original fridge because my husband and I love the idea of having the freezer on the bottom so that the fridge contents are at eye level.
fridge pros-
The number one reason to get this fridge is because it looks SO good. From the color to the chrome pulls to the logo- it’s all so beautiful.
The quality is really good too. It cools evenly. It’s Energy Star rated so it’s efficient too. I love how the freezer is a drawer so it pulls out and is easy to locate items in it. You can add an ice maker too if that’s something you’d like (I didn’t opt for one).
The doors are nice and big- they can hold up to 3 gallons of milk. The interior storage is great- there’s adjustable glass shelves and crisper drawers. We were really stocked up the last few months and the fridge held everything nicely.
fridge cons-
The only thing I could think of that I don’t like about the fridge is that you can’t change which side the handle is on. When you order the fridge, you select which side it goes on. The only issue is if you decide you want to change the layout of your room- you have to keep the fridge opening the same. For most people this won’t be an issue at all.
oven
For the oven, I got the 30″ Retro Electric Induction Range. We have zero gas coming into our house (even the water heater is electric) so I choose Big Chill’s only electric option.
oven pros
Again, the reason you get this oven is because it looks SO good! It’s 1950’s styling while having modern technology.
I love that the knobs are at the front- I think it’s so much more of a stylish option than in the back! It can me nerve wracking with kids to have the controls where little ones can reach them, but for the stove top, you have to have a pot over the burner or it won’t heat up. Or there’s a knob lock function too. The knobs themselves are beautiful and I love the switch for the oven light.
The oven itself works great! There’s a power booster function so if you’re boiling water, it starts boiling quickly! A gallon of water boils in less than 5 minutes. The inside of the oven has 3 racks and each one will accommodate a commercial size baking sheet.
Note, this oven requires a 4 prong plug that you have to buy separately. We had a 3 prong outlet. It cost us $175 for an electrician to convert our outlet to a 4 prong and wire the oven.
oven cons
bird mural wallpaper / oak dining table / pink dining chairs / chandelier / door and cabinet pink paint- Cupcake Pink / wall white paint- Ultra Pure White / spice houses / gold shelf brackets / landscape art / rug runner / stove / fridge /
Here’s my cons for the oven. 1. There isn’t a drawer in the bottom of the oven. It kind of looks like there’s one, but it doesn’t open. For a small kitchen, that made cookie sheet storage tricky. But really, usually oven drawers are a pain to use so it’s not a big deal.
2. There’s no clock or timer on the oven. I wish there was a retro looking clock or timer- it’s be so cute and functional. I just use the timer on my phone instead. But I do miss having a clock to tell the time in the kitchen.
3. If you don’t have pots and pans that work with an induction stove top, you’ll need new ones.
induction stove
The stove top is induction. Which I’ve never had before so I had a bit of a learning curve. The way it works is that a coil of copper wire is used to heat the stove. Then an electrical current heats the pot magnetically. So you HAVE to use either stainless steel or cast iron pots.
Regular aluminum or even copper pots don’t work because they’re aren’t magnetic so they won’t be able to be heated up by the magnetic field.
Induction cooking is really great because it’s efficient so you waste less heat and it can be turned on and off quickly. Since the cooktop doesn’t get as hot as other stoves, it can be easier to clean.
While I was searching for new pans to use, I really scoured the internet. If you’re looking for cute cast iron and stainless steel pots, here’s my favorites. I ended up ordering #5 below.
1 white dutch oven / 2 pink 12pc / 3 pink 7pc / 4 sauce pan / 5 stainless steel 14pc / 6 yellow 8pc / 7 grey dutch oven / 8 turquoise sauce pan / 9 green 2pc / 10 stainless steel 5pc
cost
The other thing I think I have to mention with a review is the cost- these are expensive. They are not budget friendly. They are a splurge. But you get what you pay for! These are absolutely gorgeous! And the quality is superb. I’ve never had nicer appliances and really love them- even with the few cons I listed above.
I’ve been wanting to embrace this 1950’s house since it’s what this house is and since I love all things retro! I’m so in love with these cuties and think they’re perfect in here!

Great review! I had to share a cool fact I recently learned about ovens. Did you know that the oven drawer is actually there to keep food warm until you’re ready to serve it? I always, and still do, use it to store my extra cookie sheets and muffin pans etc. File this in the “who knew” bin!

Thanks Monique! That actually rings a bell. But I’m the same, it’ll always be for storage 😂
