Well, in February I bought a set of furniture for Don’s room (it was $35 for the dresser and nightstand!!!) and I finally am getting around to painting the nightstand. There were some days this February where I bought WAY too much thrifting and I was overwhelmed with project. And boy, am I glad I did now! Especially since I can do this chalk paint nightstand makeover!
chalk paint nightstand makeover
SUPPLIES
- Furniture Cleaner
- 16 oz. Chalk Paint- I used the color Farmhouse Green
- 16 oz. Primer- I use Slick Stick to prime shiny furniture
- Paint Brush– to apply the chalk paint and primer. I prefer synthetic brushes for chalk paint
- Water Mister– this helps get an even coat of paint
- Easy Peasy Spray Wax– what you apply as a top coat to finish the nightstand
- Applicator Pad– to apply the spray wax
- Floor covering to protect your floor. I put an old towel under the legs of the nightstand
step 1
Start by cleaning super well. I use the white lightning linked above mixed with water. This nightstand was super dirty so it was good to get all the grime off.
step 2
Next I primed with slick stick. The sides are laminate so I wanted to prime so the paint doesn’t scratch off. I let that completely dry.
step 3
And now I finished with painting two coats of chalk paint. I made sure to mist the furniture with water to get a super smooth finish. After the chalk paint was dry, I rubbed on some wax as a top coat.
after
Here’s this little cutie all done! Before painting, I let Don choose any color he’d like to paint it and choose his favorite color- green. When I was priming, he was not happy with me (he thought I had gone white). But he likes it now!
Side note, when I was writing my blog post yesterday about tips for how to find your personal home decor style, I kept thinking about Don’s room. I’m really loving how this room is coming together! With the rainbow shelves and the fun wallpaper, I really love it. And Don does too- he’s so dinosaur obsessed, it’s been really fun having a room dedicated to that love.
With his last bedroom, I was scared to use lots of color. I kept working about what people would think. A boy’s room should be neutral so that’s what I did.
His room isn’t terrible, but it doesn’t tell as strong of a story ad I’d like. The next time we’re back in that house (hopefully this summer), I’d love to spend some time really personalizing this space. Adding more color and being less scared to have it match the rest of our house.
Anyway, I’m loving this room. And the nightstand painted green was a great addition! I’m hoping soon to build a table for playing at. My husband and I spend a lot of time building Lego with my son and so having a cozy spot to do that sounds amazing! It’ll be a small table since most of the time Don will still play on the floor. But for building time, we’ll have a table.
Plus I think a table would be good for future homework (or current school time).
At the end of when I was taking pictures, Don ran in and wanted to be in the pictures “pretending to sleep.” I’ll also let you guess how long the bed stayed made- hint it wasn’t long ;). I hope you’re having a good week so far!
