Last week I did my one day kitchen makeover and I love how it’s looking now! But, since my brain just can’t stop improving things, I started thinking about the layout. Right now, it’s pretty bad. Too small and not enough countertop space especially since one little counter is for dish drying. So I asked my Instagram friends for advice and did they deliver! Here’s some new kitchen floor plan options!
BEFORE
Here’s the kitchen layout how it is now. Some notes- the handle on the fridge is on the left facing side and can’t be changed. It’s a new fridge so all layouts have to work with that. I’d prefer not to get rid of the window in the kitchen. It’s can’t get bigger because of the garage and meters on the outside of the house.
The door in the kitchen swings outward and goes into the garage. The door placement can’t be moved because of the water heater and powder room in the garage. I’d like to keep the sink where it is since moving plumbing is expensive. On the wall next to the fridge is the junction box. We’re going to get a bid to move it. If it’s too expensive, we can’t remove that wall.
Last, if it’s possible, I’d like to keep my kitchen table since it’s new. Honestly, the view in the above picture is one of my favorites in the house so I’d like to keep it as is while improving everything.
Phew! That’s a lot of things to take into consideration. Let’s see some new options to make this room MUCH better!
option 1
The first option is probably my favorite! I think it gives the most additional cabinet and countertop space. In this one, we’d tear down the wall between the living room and kitchen and add a peninsula. Of course, this hinges on if we can move the junction box and tear down the wall.
There’d be a small cabinet between the fridge and peninsula like this inspiration image- hubba hubba! Thank you Suzanne for your generous help with this one!
option 2
Next, option two is to tear down the wall, move the dining table down, and put in a kitchen island. This actually is less cabinet space than the option before and I’d have to get rid of my small cabinets and shelves in the corner and my hutch in the living room. I think this option is creative and I love the idea of the island in the middle of the kitchen! Thank you Lori for this idea!
It’d be a crowded version of this-
option 3
And now, we have option three! This one is for everyone who wanted me to try to put the sink in the corner so it’s somewhat under the window. The extra counter space on top of the dishwasher would be nice. I’d have to move plumbing, but the dining room side of the kitchen could stay the same! In my head, corner sinks are lame, but this one is pretty!
Thank you Laura for this idea!
option 4
For the forth option, I present the one I really don’t think works (since my kitchen is so small)! Lol. It’s hard to tell from the floor plan, but behind the island is a bench for the dining area. I’ll show you an example below. The beauty of this one is that besides a new table, the only construction is the island.
Thank you Megan for this idea!
option 5
Finally, we have option 5! With this one I’d again not have to tear down the wall and would make the kitchen more of a U shape. The sink and stove could switch places. With this one, I’d need to get an oval table so it’d fit with the new layout. Banquette seating would be added under the window and framed in with two cabinets.
Thank you Erika for this idea! And the many others.
Note, I used the website Floorplanner to draft these up for free! It was somewhat easy to figure out. I love that I was able to really visualize my options with it.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart to everyone who helped me! I had so many people send me their floor plans that they’d dreamed up. Here’s an example-
The kitchen is flipped to take better advantage of the windows! So smart. But I’m scared at how much it’d be to move that much plumbing and electrical. Still, the generosity blew me away.
So there’s 5 kitchen layout plans! I was stumped by this room and now I feel filled with possibilities. Which one do you think would work best? I’m kind of liking option 1 or 5. I’d love to hear your thoughts! Each one can be tweaked a bit. These were so fun to dream about and thank you to everyone who really helped me brainstorm. I feel so lucky to have each of you!

I love options 1 & 5! Adding a peninsula would look lovely and be great when having guests over since the space is so open but surrounding the table with additional cabinets could be so nice, too! Can’t wait to see which direction you take it! 🙂

I am also a fan of #1 You can look out the little window to see Don in the yard and still have your beautiful wallpaper wall and view from the table out the big window. Even if you can’t take the whole wall down possibly you could take down 2.5 feet and move panel so it would be covered by refrigerator but still accessible when needed. You could still add the peninsular because the wall would be flush with the refrigerator. Hope this makes sense !

Oh that’s an interesting idea! Thanks Pat😘

I would do option 3 with the peninsula or option 5.

Thanks Sierra! I’m rooting for that too, we’ll see

I LOVE option one! I think Option one with the sink from option three would be a great combo too if the dimensions worked!

I had a thought later on about adding the dishwasher. Our home has a pretty small kitchen and came with an 18 inch dishwasher. We are a family of three too so it works perfectly for the amount of dishes we accumulate each day. Just a thought if you wanted to maximize your space by opting for a smaller dishwasher. 😊

Thanks Jessica, me too! 😘

I think 1,3, or 5. I also loved the viewer sent drawing but I think the table by the window would be better! Have fun creating

I love options 1 and 5. Both have good ideas. On 5 you could do the corner sink and then have additional counter and cabinet space where the sink was. The thing I like about 1 is the opening up of the space and having a counter to sit at and serve from if entertaining and the kitchen is not cut off from living area, good luck!

Yes, that’s what I really want too 🤞

Hello! I am delighted with the first option, I like the idea of leaving the window. I do not have a window in the kitchen and this makes it very dark. I’m eager to find out what you choose and how to remake the kitchen. I am delighted with your designs and it is interesting to me to watch how you develop. I think that option number one is the most convenient, for me it would be so. Good luck!
