I am a huge letterboard fan! I love that it is customizable, ever changing art where you can say whatever you want. I’ve shared posts in the past on how to organize letterboard letters (please read that if you don’t have a system- changing up your board is 100 times faster this way) and super cute letterboard accessories that you can buy.
Last week I came up with the idea that I could MAKE my own clay DIY letterboard accessories. I was worried they wouldn’t be that cute, but I ordered some clay off Amazon and got to work. Guys- I am THRILLED with how these little figurines came out! I couldn’t wait to share with you.

diy letterboard accessories tutorial
To make your DIY letterboard accessories, start by sculpting your clay. All I had was a kitchen knife and with that and kneading and rolling the clay, I was able to make all of the different pieces. Just start with your base and layer on accent colors until you have what you want. If you need inspiration, you can google “letterboard charms” to get fun ideas.
I made two batches and had SO much fun making these! Each batch took me about 30 minutes to make. I had plenty of clay with the pack I bought and have some leftover to make more.
bake your pieces
Once you have some pieces that you are happy with, turn on your oven to 250 degrees and bake on a foil covered cookie sheet for 20-25 minutes.
Baking won’t change your pieces AT All and they will look the same when they’re baked as when you put them in, just stiff. I was worried about this, so just know that anything you can see on the clay (finger prints, knife marks), it’ll be there once they’re done baking.
attach a letterboard piece to the back
In my collection of letterboard letters, I have some extra pieces that I never use (stars, periods, etc.). I used those and glued them to the back of my baked diy letterboard accessories so that I could put them on my board. In the pictures you can see I tried to use Tacky glue- that didn’t work! So use hot glue or gorilla glue instead. Give plenty of time to dry.
after
Here they are on the board looking pretty! I did a few “themes” of DIY letterboard accessories. First up, I made a few mini plants and a house (that looks like the emoji).
Next, I had the most fun making some summer inspired letterboard charms! A pineapple, sunglasses, ice cream, flamingo, and palm tree. Aren’t these fun?!
The third and final set I did, was a whimsical one. I had a friend that used to say that I was all about rainbows and unicorns (since I’m so optimistic, I think). Plus, I added donuts since they’re my favorites. So this one goes out to Randy 😉
Don wanted to be in one photo…
Guys- please make these with me! I know I’m not the only letterboard lover! These are great to make with kids and are fast, affordable and free. Let me know what you create! This post contains some affiliate links for your convenience. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.
