If you’re at all new around here- in January I am doing 25 days of DIY projects. I took submissions for what I should make and one of them was for a neon light. I’ve wanted to have my own so this was a fun project for me! I have two versions and they are both super easy!

Let’s start with the video tutorial so you get an overview on what I did. Then, I’ll dive in with more details below:
If the video doesn’t work here, you can watch it on YouTube here. P.s. I’m trying to build that page up, so if you’d subscribe, I’d really appreciate that!supplies for version 1
- canvas
- el wire
- thread and needle
- painters paint
step 1
Draw out the word or symbol you want on the canvas with a pencil. Use a needle to push a hole through the canvas. String the light through the hole. Use painters tape to adhere the light to your outline. Once you have it where you want, take a thread and needle to tack the light to the canvas as you take the tape off.
step 2
After the light is all tacked down and the tape is off, erase any pencil signs off. Turn the canvas around and tape the battery pack to the back of the canvas. Turn on and enjoy!

Heidi Swapp makes the cutest cutouts specifically for making your own neon sign! They are super easy to use and are affordable. Here’s a few more options in case you want to go this way-
instructions
This one is super easy! Just string the light through the wood cutout. There’s holes to push it through and then it just sits in the grooves. Next, cut the excess light and connect the battery pack. And that’s it!
So there are two ways to make your own DIY sign! Easy and super easy ;). I now have this cute create neon light sign in my bedroom and love it!

So can you only use the neon wire for one thing, is that right? Like you can’t use the leftover wire for another project, because it wouldn’t have a plug in, is that right? Thank you!

Hi Sabrina,
I don’t think you can use it for anything else because it’s not connected to the battery pack.
