Thanks to Overstock for working with me on this post!
A few weeks ago I shared with you for my sister’s guest room. As a quick recap, Kate is my big sister and she lives nearby me with her adorable family. She has a new home with one empty room- I decided to give her a super fun gift for Christmas, a furnished room that is the perfect place for her lucky guests to relax!
before
Just so you guys can see how far we came, this was right after she moved in and this was the “extra box” room.
After this photo was taken, they cleared out the room and painted it Frappe by Valspar, creating the perfect space for a complete makeover!
the plan
In case you missed my preview, my sister recently went on a trip to India and I was inspired to design the room with a global flair with details catered to things I knew she’d love!
overstock
Everything in this room came from Overstock! They are the one-stop shop for all of your decorating and holiday needs. They had so many options of beautiful items that worked perfectly for this room, I am seriously impressed by their selection.
Plus, nothing beats shopping from home- especially during this time of year! Overstock makes it easy, with great loyalty rewards through Club O and free shipping over $45 (which I love).
It was really fun setting up the room because I got to spend a lot of time at my sister’s house and with her and her kids. She’d watch Don, make me lunch, and help out when she could. I sure love being able to do my favorite things- decorating and spending time with my family. My sister so deserves this room and I hope she loves it!
Who’s ready to see how it turned out?!
after
The room was a beautiful blank slate. However, we needed to work with the carpet and since my sister doesn’t love the color, we choose the gorgeous Moroccan Marrakesh rug in a huge 9’x12′ size. It added the perfect beige foundation to the room and I love how the entire design works with the carpet.
Wouldn’t it be such a fun idea to leave a camera for your guests in your guest room?! That way they could take pictures while they explored your city and you’d be the best host ever!
bed
When designing the room, the next thing I selected was the bed. I wanted something upholstered and that’d have some beautiful details without being too over powering. I fell in love with this metal poster bed.
The bed is the perfect backdrop to a super luxurious layered bedding of linen sheets, quilted Euro shams, a gorgeous Boho quilt, and a faux fur throw. I love mostly white bedding so the room feels a little hotel like (perfect for a guest room!). What’s even better is that the quilt is reversible in case my sister ever wants to change up the look of the room.
At the base of the bed I place a tray with a simple treat and tea. I know I’d love this touch if I was visiting 🙂
benches
At the foot of the bed, I placed two x-base benches with beautiful nail head trim. I love that this is a good place to put on shoes or open your suitcase.
Directly above the benches is the most stunning beaded chandelier. I tried adding in lots of tone on tone texture, and this light fixture is the crowning piece of the room.
nightstands
I choose a neutral white night stand to go on the right side of the bed. It has a little bead board detail in the bottom and I appreciate that cute touch!
I am a girl who loves symmetry so I topped the nightstands with a pair of gorgeous cream gourd lamps. While in India, my sister visited an elephant sanctuary so I put a little elephant figurine as a sweet reminder.
I went with a more eclectic look to the right of the bed (guests rooms are great for this!), and used an end table I already owned as a night stand. I love the bit of gold it adds to the room.
woven wall hanging
I wanted to keep the art on the mural simple, so I added the prettiest woven wall hanging. The neutral colors with the accents of gold are interesting, add texture, and accentuate the wallpaper. I think it brings in the global feel and honestly, I love decorating with woven wall hangings because they are such a beautifully soft item that brings unexpected texture to a room.
curtains
To the right of the bed, is a window, and since this is a basement room, I added sheer window coverings to not block any light. The curtains have little teal pompom fringe- isn’t decorating all about those sweet details?!
wooden art
Next to the window is the prettiest wooden art. It’s actually a set of three plaques that I originally planned to go over the bed, but it took away from the mural and was a bit of a tight fit. I love it here because it fills up the wall with such intricate carvings.
christmas tree
Since its Christmas time, I added a 4′ Christmas tree to make the room extra festive for my sister and her family! It is adorned with the sweetest round and heart ornaments and topped with a felt star from India. My sister told me that she tried so hard to buy ornaments in India, but couldn’t find any. So I love that I could get these for her courtesy of Overstock’s Worldstock collection!
chair
One of my favorite moments in the room is the blue dresser and beige chair! The wing chair has the sweetest curves and I adore the subtle texture! It’s interesting but still fits perfectly in the entire look. And how great will it be for reading in?!
dresser
When I asked my sister what her favorite part of the room, she said it is this dresser and mirror! My sister loves blue so I was so excited to find this! It is sweet and petite and now her guests have a place to put their socks.
dresser decor
The first piece I choose for the top of the dresser is this arched mirror. I love that the arch echoes India’s architecture. My sister said that the arch is also the same shape as the prayer rugs so I’m glad it reminds her of her travels. I also framed a photo of the Taj Mahal for that reason too. The Buddha statue and globe finished off this India themed/ wanderlust dresser.
Let’s do one last before and after look again!
Get the look

This room was SUCH a fun project to work on! Thank you again to Overstock for helping me with this room! My love language is gifts so being able to give this room to my sister meant everything to me. She said “I felt like I won the lottery!” And guys, this is so cheesy but I do too by having her be my big sister. Love you Katy!
