Thanks to Overstock for teaming up with me on this post!
Every year I am super interested to hear what Pantone chooses as the color of the year. Pantone’s pick definitely influences trends and can be a good forecaster of what is to come. This year they choose Ultra Violet as the 2018 color of the year and I’ll be honest, it seems a little out of left field. Violet is such a bold and overbearing color that I wasn’t so sure.
It seems like other designer bloggers are also on the fence about Ultra Violet too (see their reactions here). But maybe that is what is so genius about the choice! It might feel fresh in a home because not many people are using it right now.
I know that I can always count on Overstock.com as my go-to for trendy home decor items and they have a huge selection of violet colored items for you to choose from if you’re looking to refresh your home or 2018.
psychology of purple
I love this example of a dash of violet in a white modern room! The bench is from Overstock
Purple is the color of royalty. It symbolizes power, luxury, and wealth. This bold color is associated with wisdom, creativity, and magic.
Because purple is a combination of energetic red and soothing blue, purple in interiors can have a calming effect and also trigger creativity. This makes purple a great choice for any room in the house! Its not sounding so bad now after all, right?!
how to add the Pantone color of the year ultra violet to your home

So if you love violet and want to dip your toes into adding the color into your home, there are some easy ways to do it! Start with small items that aren’t quite a huge commitment- think throw pillows, vases, art, flowers, coasters, and blankets. Here are some of my favorite non-committal purple items from Overstock:
vase / bookends / pillow / throw blanket / chair / orchid / art / coasters
ways to add violet to your home in a big way
Now if you are in love with violet and are ready to take the plunge and add it everywhere, well this paragraph is for you! Bigger furniture, tile, rugs- make them all violet or add a few purple pieces to a mostly white room. Ready for some cute violet statement pieces from Overstock?!
bench / tile / sofa / pouf / rug / chandelier / chair
When I was 13 my mom let me paint my room. What color did I choose? Purple! I wouldn’t let anyone else help me because I wanted it painted perfectly- lol! I lived in that purple room until I went to college and I loved it! Now, I’m not quite ready to kick pink out for violet in my house, but I definitely see its appeal!

This is my first time seeing the new Pantone Color for 2018. I was expecting brighter color by the clever name of this shade of purple. However, I think you did a great job showing examples of how to add the right amount of Ultra Violet to your home. I can see an accent wall in a master bedroom feeling very cozy and romantic. Or maybe painting a den/library at home would like nice with mid-dark wood bookcases. Nice post 🙂

These are all great choices, I think I’d go with something a bit smaller, like a rug or a piece of artwork… Something to think about!

even purple flowers would be a fun accent!
