A few months ago, I revealed the first finished room in this house- my son Don’s room! Side note, its his 4th birthday today and I just can’t help reminiscing about this day 4 years ago- he totally stole my heart! He’s why I started this blog so it feel appropriate to be talking about fixing up his room today.
Happy birthday sweet little boy- I love you to the moon and back! P.s. if you want to read his birth story, you can here.
Anyway, when I shared the “finished” space it was WORLDS better than when we moved in! There used to be a huge fort in the room, the darkest blue walls, and brown painted floors. It was atrocious!
Although it definitely would deserve the “most improved room” award, there were still a few things that bugged me. Houses are never really done are they? And for me, that is ok. I love living in a space and seeing what works and what doesn’t. And if it doesn’t, I take it as a personal challenge to improve it until it doesn’t- which I think is fun! #nerdalert 😂
I thought I’d share a few changes we’ve made and the plans for this space.
plans for Don’s room- the bed
The bed in Don’s room makes me a little crazy. I think the lines on the headboard are super cute, but the paint scratches off easily. I painted the wood headboard with latex paint before I knew about chalk paint. I will honestly never paint any other furniture with anything besides chalk paint again! So I’d like to replace or re-paint the headboard.

Next, I HATE the metal base. Mostly because it’s ugly. I don’t like the metal legs and I’m not a fan of the bed skirt over those legs (that still show anyway). I’m thinking that I’ll build a wood base to cover the metal legs and ditch the bed skirt.
So those pictures were from when the room was cleaned up and staged for a photo. The truth is that Don’s bed sits against the wall with a bed rail so he doesn’t fall off the bed. I’d like to build my own bed rail and make it super cute! I’m thinking about creating a cloud shaped side rail that would be so fun with the cloud mural!
The last change I’m thinking of with the bed is to put a full bedding set on his bed so I don’t have to see the mismatched bedding. That’s a pretty easy one at least!
the rocker
Finally, I have replaced this rocker. The one pictured has been donated because it was SO dirty! I need to get the new rocker set-up and then I’ll share it here. Hint to new moms- don’t get a light grey (almost white) rocker 😉
updates to this space
The biggest update I’ve made to Don’s room is that we added a storage bench to the foot of his bed. We are all loving this addition! Don calls it his “secret treasure chest” and has shoved it full of things (including underware- lol)!
I like it because Lucy can use it as a dog step to hop on the bed- she sleeps with him some nights.
And I think that the herringbone pattern on the bench is so beautiful and subtle.
KID BENCH ROUND UP
If you’re in the market for an end of bed bench for the little one in your life, I’ve rounded up some budget friendly options that are nice and neutral. Most of these have storage too!
grey with white piping / grey diamond storage bench / black and white jungle storage bench / indigo and white lattice / herringbone grey bench with arms / grey clouds bench / grey velvet bench / gray settee / chevron storage bench /
the rest of the room
dresser tutorial / grey chair – similar / vintage car art / window shutters / floors / curtain on closet
While the room was all cleaned up, I got pictures of the rest of the room. I thought you might like to see these as well so you can see how the whole room works together. Stay tuned as I do a few more updates in this room this month!
