When the Pillowfort collection came out at Target, I fell in love with the kid mini industrial chairs. But I had no room for them. We live in a tiny condo and I just couldn’t rationalize the space two chairs and a play table would take up. But creating is so important to me and I really wanted a place where Don could sit and color and so I started brainstorming how I could make a mini desk DIY for Don. I was pinning away on Pinterest one day and BOOM! The perfect inspiration photo popped up in my feed:
I couldn’t stop thinking about it! I showed it to my husband and he wasn’t convinced that we even had the space for the tiny desk. So I put a diaper box in the spot where I wanted the desk and it wasn’t in the way, so I decided to go for it!please note, affiliate links are used in this post
I headed to a few stores to gather what I needed. First up I went to Target to get the chairs. This was a splurge item ($79.99 for a set of two), but I love them and there was room in my budget decorating budget for them. They are sold as a set of two. The cash register person might now know and try to charge you twice, so just pay attention :). I may sell the second chair because I really don’t need two.

Then I popped over to Home Depot to get a shelf and two brackets. The genius in this project is that you are using ready made products so no cutting! I bought laminated boards to help with easy cleaning. I love that all of the edges are finished I found a 10″x23″ board for $4.48. I could only find a $10 option online, so check your store because it might be cheaper.
I then bought 2 shelf brackets in white. I was a little underwhelmed by the selection. There were probably 15-20 options but they weren’t great and a little expensive for what they were. So I went simple hoping it would disappear and you wouldn’t really pay attention to it.
What I love about this project is that this part is so cheap! $15 for a semi custom desk/play table is great! I brought everything home and secured the brackets onto the shelf
I then gathered the art I wanted for the desk

And I put everything together. I am thrilled with this little desk!
He loves it! He loves getting on and off of the chair and eating snacks at his desk and playing with toys in a new area.
While I was anchoring the desk to the wall, I left the pencil on the floor and Don grabbed it and did his first wall graffiti. It came off easily, but I’ve been scared to try crayons since!
I wanted to get a picture of Lucy in the chair and Don wanted in on that! He loved snuggling on the chair. She didn’t love it as much and would quickly jump down. He would beg me to put her up again (saying “please” in sign language). It was so cute and I might have given in!
Haha! So they love it! I also wanted to tell a side story. My sister invited us to dinner the other night to celebrate the launch of my book. She said she had a gift for me. I thought was sweet, but when I looked in the bag I couldn’t help but cry. She was giving me her camera! Her fancy Cannon Rebel! I was overwhelmed with gratitude and humbled and felt inadequate. Anyway, I finally got over my fear of using it and took these pictures with it. I’ll slowly figure it out and am excited to be more professional! Thank you to my little sister Holly, I am so grateful for your support!

I love the mint green chairs! It all turned out great! Not to mention your little Don is darling! I had to laugh when your husband didn’t think it would fit, so you sat down the diaper box and it worked:-) It just shows how great of an idea it was when he was so thrilled to sit at the desk!
