A few weeks ago, this is what my 4 year old son’s bed looked like. Pretty scary! But also probably typical for a little kid. It was a mess of mix matched bedding, stuffed animals, and a bed frame that I wasn’t a fan of. I decided to tackle the situation!
First up, I replaced the headboard and made a frame for the bed from shiplap. After painting the bed a soft gray color to match the headboard, it was time to figure out the bedding situation.
p.s. you can see the full diy on the shiplap bed here.
bedding rules
Here are my simple rules for making a twin bed-
- Always start with a foundation of fresh sheets. Comfy sheets help you start to build a cozy cocoon.
- Next, layer on some warmth and style in a beautiful way. Over the flat sheet, place a quilt or duvet. Here is where you add pattern, color, texture, or all three.
- Now its time to toss on some pillows! Follow the graphic above by starting with an Euro pillow, layer a standard pillow, and then add on an accent pillow or stuffed animal if desired. Choose pillow covers in colors that will coordinate with the duvet or quilt.
- Finish up by laying or tossing a folded throw or blanket at the bottom of the bed. Details count on a well-dressed bed and a blanket at the end of the bed can make the space look inviting.
one bed three ways
I thought that it’d be fun to illustrate how to make a bed by showing it three different ways. One of the fun things about bedding is that you can buy a few key pieces and then switch them up to completely change the look of the bed! I shopped at The Company Store to pull some fun pieces that I could mix and match for a few looks!
I love The Company Store because they have a big variety of beautiful bedding pieces. Plus the quality is top notch. The Company Store owns Cstudio Home (who I just used for my master bedroom bedding). I love their offering and I think you will too!
simple guest bed
This is the most simple of the three bedding variations. We don’t have a guest room, so this is where guests stay when visiting. White sheets for that fresh hotel vibe, a layering of pillows, and a soft quilt for the perfect night’s rest.

birds bedding
I thought birds would be so cute with Don’s cloud mural! This is a flannel duvet cover so it’s super cozy and perfect for the winter.
One of the best things about The Company Store’s bedding is that the duvet cover has strings in the corners. Then the duvet has loops in the corners so that the duvet can be tied into the cover. It makes it really easy to fill the duvet.

dinosaur bedding
Last up, is the dinosaur bedding. This is my son’s favorite so this is what will stay on the bed. The Company Store has a whole kids line and the bedding is adorable! I love the color this adds while being a pattern that my son is really into. Win win!
Can we also talk about the monogrammed sheets?! First off, they are super soft! I also love that there is an embroidery option so you can customize sheets with a monogram or a name. It definitely feels classic and special. The Company Store has a bunch of monogram options available if you want to check them out here.

When I shared a sneak peek of the Dino bedding on Instagram stories, I got a TON of questions about it. I figure that my son isn’t the only one obsessed with dinosaurs, so I did a round up of my favorite options-
There you have it! The bed is 1000 times better than where we began! With a quality duvet insert, a few duvet covers, a quilt, and some pillow covers it was easy to mix and match everything needed to switch up the look seasonally or just when you feel like it.
Which bedding combo is your favorite?
Hopefully this gave you some ides for how to make a twin bed in style.
