In the post about Don’s room reveal, I shared all about the big pieces of furniture, but I wanted to share more about the small details that really make it special!
mural
For me, the mural of the clouds from Anewall is what really pulls the whole room together! It is quite the statement and really helps for the calming factor in the room. I used removable wallpaper since we are renting and it went up quickly and easily. I adore how the mural really finishes the room!
SITTING AREA
The rocking chair corner is one of my favorite in the room! It is cozy and whimsical with the big ship (that is actually a kite)!
Next to the ship, I hung a turtle print which was a thrift store find for $15. I painted the frame gold (it was silver) and the matte a putty color (it was green). I think that this corner looks collected and I like that!
On the end table, I placed the cutest constellation globe (it is super affordable on Amazon!). Perfect for the “sea” theme, right?! Next to it, I have a vintage brass sail boat (I found it on Etsy) and a bowl of sea shells.
rope end table
I thought I would share how I made the rope end table! It is an easy DIY and so perfect for any nautical room!
Materials
-
Tray (for the top of the table)
-
3 packages of 50′ 3/8″ cotton rope (or 150′ of continuous rope). I used two different thicknesses to make it skinnier at the bottom.
- utility knife
instructions
Step 1- cut the tube down to 20″ high by using a utility knife. The tube is big enough to make two end tables if you want.
Step 2- use hot glue to attach the rope to the tube. This takes forever- watch a good TV show while completing.
Step 3- use liquid nails to attach the tray to the top of the tube. And you’re done! Super easy and its fun to make a piece of furniture from scratch!
a/c cover
In each room of our house, there is an air conditioning unit. I am grateful for the cold air, but they sure are ugly! My husband made custom A/C covers that add some nice display area. I’ll do a full DIY with how to make these soon!
On the A/C cover I placed a plant, some of Don’s favorite books, and a shell. One day were at the beach and this huge shell washed up! We were admiring it when a tiny crab crawled out! I thought it would be perfect for the room, so we brought it home.
tea set
On top of Don’s play table, we have a cute tea set from Target. I love that it has boy and girl colors on it and consider it gender neutral. A few days ago, I got a message that someone was SO surprised that I let Don play with it since it is a girl toy. I thought that was silly since Don loves it. In my opinion, I figure if a child likes to play with something that engages their imagination, it is a good toy no matter the color.
rug
I love shag rugs because of the texture they add to a room! This one is wool from Rugs USA and is super thick and plush. It is our dog’s favorite place to sleep and Don loves to play on it. It is the thickest, coziest rug I’ve ever owned!
bedding
In Don’s old room, his bedding was always a mess. I heard about Beddy’s- they are a type of bedding that the comforter fits over the mattress like a fitted sheet. Then you use a zipper to open the flap that has a sheet and blanket layer. In the morning, you just zip up the bed to make it! I choose the grey sketch version (no longer available). The beige pillow is from Target and the whale pillow is from Amazon.
Isn’t it fun how the small accessories you add to a room can add interest and personality?! I am thrilled with how this room came together- I genuinely love it and so does Don. And isn’t that the way it is supposed to be?!
