Don’s room has been such a fun space for me to design! I went with a whole new theme then I ever would have since we are now living in Florida- “The Sea.” For a little boy who’d love to go the beach everyday (and sometimes he does), he is loving this space.
I wanted to give Overstock a quick thank you for sending over the furniture for this room- the room came together so beautifully because of them (and their amazing selection). The pillows are fluffed, the curtains are hung- let’s dig in, shall we?!
before
Here’s how it looked with the previous resident- not bad, not great.
When we arrived a month ago it was empty besides some art and the wardrobe.
don’s room reveal
Oh man- isn’t it so cozy and fun now?! This room is the happiest in our house. It feels so good to have all the details in place! I don’t know how to describe it, but it is such a cheerful room- where we all want to be.
daybed
For me, the star of the room is that gorgeous daybed. We centered it under the window and it really anchors the room. I selected a lot of tone on tone beige and white furniture for a calm and cozy space. I love how the daybed looks against the large mural!
On Instagram, I’ve gotten countless questions about the daybed– the quality is excellent. Most of the time, it is pushed against the wall so its like a big crib and he climbs in (and doesn’t climb out!). It is super sturdy. I’ve laid in there with him and again, I had absolutely zero quality concerns.
Some people have asked me what size mattress I got- I choose a twin size 10″. I guess there are some reviews that with a twin there are gaps between the mattress and the daybed, but we haven’t encountered that. A twin mattress is the perfect fit.
rocking chair
As I mentioned when I shared the plans for Don’s room, I love having a rocking chair for evening snuggles and book reading. This rocker has the most beautiful tufting and clean lines which are perfect for the room! The white leather pouf is great for a foot rest or extra seating.
This little corner might be my favorite in the whole room! I made a DIY rope end table (tutorial coming soon!) with a tray from Overstock. I just love the way the textures and colors off each other (especially with the sail boat!). Even though we moved in a month ago, the room feels collected and layered.
play table
For a little kid room, I think a play table is a must! Especially when the table and chairs are so modern and cute ;). I love how portable they are- we use the play table all around the house (though it lives under the TV most of the time).
We do art time here and after I got him that little tea set, lots of pretend time. There’s that scene in Toy Story 3 where Bonnie has tea with Woody and I think Don’s been re-enacting it. It’s pretty adorable! I love providing him a space where his imagination can soar.
conclusion
I am thrilled with how Don’s room came together! It was fun for me to do something a little outside of my comfort zone. Don loves the room- we all do! Stay tuned for a few DIY’s and details about the accent pieces from the space this coming week.
I’d love to hear your favorite part!
Update: If you want more details on Don’s room (like information on the mural or ship)- I share them all here.
p.s. if you are in the market for any home decor- Overstock has extended their President’s sale through the 22nd! Overstock has an amazing selection of everything you need to get your home ready for spring, at affordable prices. I promise you’ll find something you love, or maybe a roomful ;).
One of my favorite tips for how to decorate on a budget are to shop on dates where there are good sales. Well President’s Day is definitely one of them! A few pieces from this room are on sale! The daybed is $78 off and the rocking chair is $55 off.
Oh, and should we finish with one more before and after?!

I thought the room looked feminine and then you said you got your SON a tea set!! Does your husband agree with the TEA SET? AND, what prevents him from falling off that bed? Tsk. Tsk.

Hi Cate! My husband is fine with my son having a tea set- we both are. He likes to play with it. He sets his animals on the chairs and they pretend to have a meal together- I’m not sure what is so feminine about that? Do men not drink beverages at a table? Most of the time my son plays with cars and garbage trucks, but if he likes something I don’t stop him based on his gender. As far as the bed goes, we have it set-up this way for photos. Right now the open side is pushed against the wall like a big crib. There is no possible way for him to fall out- thank you for your concern.

My son would love a room like that. It really is to die for! I love the delicate colours, so unlike most kids rooms

The whole room looks great and I’m sure little Don will have lots of fun playing in there. Did you create the mural yourself or is it wallpaper, it is very striking.

Hi Mary! The mural is from an Etsy shop named Anewall.
