Have you heard of the Danish term Hygge? I’ve recently been hearing about it a lot and love the idea of it. Basically, it is the Danish ritual of enjoying life’s simple pleasures such as friends, family, and graciousness. In Denmark, the winters are long and dark so they embrace hygge as a way to enjoy life, even in the months when they are stuck inside. Now, some tips on how to keep your home cozy in the summer:
how to keep your home cozy in the summer
As I’ve been cleaning up our home after the big kitchen renovation, I’ve been trying to make it cozy or hygge and thought I’d pass on my best tips for doing so.
bring outside in
The beauty of summer is that flowers are fresh so cut some out of your garden and bring them inside! What I love about flowers is they are a simple pleasure- they are beautiful, the smell amazing, and they add color and literally life to your home.
Once a week I stop by either Trader Joe’s or the wholesale flower market and grab a bunch of my favorite in season flower. Flowers are cheapest when then are actually growing outside, so this is an easy way to treat yourself on a budget!
I have a small tip, when you bring home flowers from the store, they come in a plastic sleeve. When you are ready to cut your flowers to place them in a vase, cut the plastic sleeve in half. Then lay the flowers on the plastic and use it as a mini tarp. When you cut off the stems, they will fall on the sleeve. Then, when your flowers are in the vase, you just scoop up the plastic and you have a super quick clean up! The alternative is stems all over your counter top, sink, on the floor- not that I’ve ever done that 😉

lighter weight blankets
I love sleeping under a super thick blanket, but come summer I store my thick comforter and go for a sheet/quilt combo. The quilt is folded at the foot of the bed in case we get a rare cold night. It’s also a nice landing spot for the dogs to sleep and helps keep the white sheets clean longer.

I also switch out the thick cozy throw on my summer for a Turkish throw. I love that it’s light enough to still cuddle under even in the summer!

spring clean
I love a clean house, so I use the changing of seasons as the perfect excuse to dust and vacuum and mop when I haven’t for awhile. Especially with a white house, I feel like my house feels so much fresher and alive after a good cleaning.
During our kitchen renovation, the top of our dresser held all of our pots and pans for over a month! It was so nice to clean it all off and arrange the accessories beautifully!

invite people over
The last step is to invite people over! We just had people over to celebrate a friend being in town. It was so fun to show off our new kitchen and just chat for hours over good food! Our home never feels happier or cozier than when it’s full of our favorite friends. I didn’t get any pictures of the event because I was busy hosting. Also, Don was a little confused when he woke up from his nap to a home full of people (and little people playing with his toys)!
lighten up
Light some candles! Candles are good for any season and I love bringing in a scent just for summer. I love how Candles are similar to flowers in that they effect the mood of my home, make it smell good, and liven it up.

I’d love to hear how you make your home comfortable in the summer! Just leave me a note in the comments!
I also wanted to share with you my favorite new candle line from Chesapeake Bay Candle.
home scents collection
All of the candles I have are from the Home Scents collection. Each fragrance is classic, everyday favorite that works for every season. And these will last a long time because they have an 80 hour burn time! They come in a clear glass jar with a silver metallic lid. I think the design is beautiful and it fits in nicely in my home. Here’s some more information about the scents in case you want one too:
- Snuggly Sweater– Experience Snuggly Sweater for comforting notes of warm wool wrap around lavender and rose as it rests on a base of white amber, vanilla and musk ready to snuggle up to.
- Jasmine Bouquet is an enchanting floral fragrance infused with rich jasmine and magnolia tied into a bouquet of dewy lilies and soft green leaves.
- Waterfall is a crisp scent of a morning breeze splashed with hints of cool citrus and fresh water lily amid soft cotton undertones.
- Sea Salt Vanilla is the perfect balance of sweet and salty it creates a fun yet surprisingly fresh aroma with notes of ocean air, musk, vanilla and heart of rose.

Cute post Ashley! You’re obviously an expert in making a home feel cosy.
I’d never heard of Hygge before, but it sounds like something we all need a bit of, especially in the winter months! How did you learn about it?
Buying fresh flowers that are in season is a great tip to help save money! It can be easy to get carried away buying the same flowers, but if you choose ones that are in season, it means you get to rotate throughout the year.
Thanks for sharing Ashley, I’m going to share this post on Twitter 🙂
