I’ve had a felt letter board for years. I get lots of questions about how to set it up, tips for creating quotes, and how to keep it clean. Here are my best tips!
A few years ago, I got my first letter board and since then I’ve had so much fun using it to display quotes! I love that they’re an affordable way to have customized art. I mean, how cute is this?!
Recently in my Facebook group, I got asked about what you need to know before you buy a letter board. I thought I’d pass on my best tips and tricks so that anyone who is making a new purchase will have it go as smoothly as possibly!
what can I expect when my letter board arrives?
One thing I was surprised by when I got my first letter board is that the letters are connected by a plastic rod. You need to use scissors to cut them off. It’s a little annoying, but it only takes 5-10 minutes.
how do you keep the board clean?
Letter boards are made of felt which means, sadly, that it attracts dust. But this is easy to clean up with a lint roller. Since my board is white (and everything shows on it including stains from a certain toddler), I’ve used a damp rag to clean up any spots. Another thing that can happen is pilling. If that happens, it can easily be removed with a razor, just like a sweater.
how do you center the words on the board?
Personally, I just eye ball the board and line them up as close as possible to the center as possible. If you’re more of a perfectionist than I am, Mandi from Vintage Revivals shares how she ties a string around her board to mark center in this blog post.
how do you organize the letters?
At first, I just used the fabric bag that the letters came in and took forever to sort through them for my quotes. Then I got smarter and I bought two of these super affordable plastic bins and organized my letters alphabetically. I talk more about how I organized my letter board letters here.
how do you come up with quotes?
I like to search Pinterest for quotes. This is one of my favorite boards to look for cute and funny quotes. Letterfolk’s Instagram page always has good quotes too. I’ll also use my letter board to celebrate birthdays and holidays- even the theme for my son’s first year of preschool!
where do you get those cute icons you use on your boards?
A few months ago, I discovered that you can buy really affordable and cute letter board accessories (like the arrow, emojis, and flowers above). I have a whole blog post with my favorite ones!
I also made my own letter board accessories with clay! You can check out that tutorial here. Side note, I really needed to use a lint roller on this board! Its pretty obvious with a black letter board.
where can I buy an affordable letter board?
My favorite place to buy letter boards is on Amazon! If you get a 10×10 inch size, you can get them for as low as $15 depending on the color! And speaking of color, you can get them in pretty much any shade of the rainbow-
hot pink / coral / yellow / green / seafoam / blue / purple / grey / black / white
I have a light pink letter board that I got for around $20. The white letter board I have is also from Amazon. Its the Heidi Swapp brand and I love it! Its bigger so you can put nice big quotes on it, which makes it a little more expensive. I just love the white frame and the large size.

Hi Ashley
I am trying to download your “Make You Smile” kitchen aid printables but am having a difficult time doing so. Will you please send them to me? I would like to get them printed and framed for a Christmas present for my daughter.
Thank you,
Janie
