We moved into this house in January and set-up each room. Over the following months, I decorated and perfected every space except the master bedroom. To say that its boring would be an understatement! I think most people can sympathize- why is it always our room that comes last?!
I think one reason that the master bedroom is the last decorated space in the house is that no one sees it except you. That is usually the case, but the door to our backyard is through the master bedroom, so everyone that comes over eventually sees our master.
A strong belief I have with decorating is that you should make your house happy for YOU, not for your friends and not for what other think, but so it serves you. The master bedroom should be a cozy sanctuary that creates a safe haven for rest. With that feeling in mind. I decided it was finally time to spruce up my master bedroom! Let’s start with the before photos:
before

Do you see what I mean by boring?! All of the basics were in place, but it felt a little sad and “blah”. If your bedroom needs a little help too, are the 10 ways to bring your bedroom from boring to beautiful:
Rug
My goal for the master bedroom is to be inviting and cozy, so adding this raspberry colored rug was key. It is incredibly soft and I love feeling it first thing in the morning when my feet hit the ground. A rug brings in color, pattern, and texture so it quickly worked its magic! You can do a rug if you have carpet too- especially carpet you hate (I did this in the guest room I designed).
Go bold like I did, or keep it more tone and tone for a softer touch. My rug is from American Signature Furniture and when I shared it on Instagram stories a few weeks ago, I got SO many questions on it! I got the 8’x10′ size. If my room was bigger, I would have laid it the other way (it barely didn’t fit). BUT I still love the color and softness it adds to the room.

Vanity and Stool
If you put on makeup or do your hair, you need a vanity. It’s so nice to have a dedicated area for getting ready and once you have one, you’ll never go back (I used to sit on the floor to do my makeup- no thanks)! My vanity was in place, but I was using a dining room chair for sitting. It was fine, but after having to move it from room to room, I was ready to have a dedicated solution.
Comfy Chair
I love to add a comfy seating area in every bedroom I design. If you have space, that could be a settee or a bench at the end of the bed. It’s nice to have a place to sit while you put on your shoes, read, or a place for dirty clothes ๐ .
I’ve wanted one of these rockers forever and this one is surprisingly affordable! I added a textured pillow to soften it up. The rocker gives this corner a nice modern vibe while the wood rockers keep it warm. Besides the rug, this is one of my favorite additions!
Create a Reading Area with an End Table
This corner used to be empty and sad. There’s a window to the master bedroom shower there, so I hung a poppy tapestry to cover it.
I wanted to convert the corner it into a reading area so I added the rocking chair and this amazing end table! The base is brass and the detail is stunning. The top is stone and super heavy. Adding this table completed the space and it now feels welcoming and inviting.
Pillows
Since a bedroom is all about comfort- pillows are the perfect accessory! For the bed, I suggest 2 Euro pillows for a queen (3 for a king), 2 standard pillows that you actually sleep on (use king sized pillows for a king bed), and 1 accent pillow. Use the pillows to add in the pattern, texture, and color you might be lacking elsewhere.
p.s. a tutorial for those dog steps is coming up! Check back in a few days.
Flowers & plants
Our bedroom is too dark to keep plants alive (sob!), so I added in fresh flowers. Usually we don’t have this many, but I have found nothing livens up a room better than something that is, well, alive!
Books
I love to decorate with books- they add color (make sure the spine design of the book works with your room) and personality and you can actually read them ๐ . I like to add books that are currently inspiring me to my room so that when I have a minute, I can pickup a book and dive right in.
clock
My husband’s night stand was totally empty in the before photos and I guess that’s how he likes it! The flowers didn’t stay there long, but I added a clock as a functional accessory that he doesn’t hate. I can’t complain with how he wants his areas because he does put up with my pink decorating.
Lamp
Table lamps make a room glow and are super helpful for light at night. No one wants to walk through a dark room right before bed and trip over furniture. I added a lamp for my side and my husband’s side for ambiance and reading.
color, pattern and texture
The accents in your room are what make it come together and create a balanced design. Don’t be afraid to go bold with your accessories- the goal is to have them add color, pattern and texture. These three elements make a room interesting. Add in your personality by choosing items you love. The room should feel like you and your partner.
At the end of the day, I want my bedroom to feel like an escape from my busy life. I’m not in here much, but when I am, I want it to feel special while being functional. It worked fine how it was before, but now it feels like my special space- where I can read and rest.
I hope these ideas have helped you! If your bedroom is boring but “working” its worth it to add in some layers to get it feeling like a sanctuary. Yes- its all for you! Let’s make that a good thing instead of a reason not to address it. Finally, a space where you can think about just what you and your partner need. That’s an important and a worthy goal.

Very nice. All of your little touches are what makes it “yours”. I like the wood floors in this room as well. I find that it takes some time after we move into a space to make it “ours”. Thanks for sharing your tips.
