I have a really fun and affordable DIY today! Here’s the truth- you can have the house of your dreams no matter your budget or house size. While I’ve been decorating our rental house in Florida, I’ve had to shop at thrift stores and make my own pieces since I don’t have the budget to buy everything brand new. But I think it is a GOOD thing to mix new and handmade and second hand- it makes it feel collected. So here’s the DIY:
DIY FLORAL HAIRPIN BENCH
MATERIALS
-Set of 4 hairpin legs (from Amazon prime and super affordable!)
-Wood board (mine is 10″x 42″)
-Screws to secure legs into wood
–Quilt Batting (I bought 1 yard)
-Fabric (I bought 1/2 yard- I got the fabric from Joann’s, but I can’t find it online. The receipt calls it “Wuji satin floral print 400157711321”)
step one
cut your wood the desired length. You can go super custom and cut whatever will fit your home best. I was originally going for 36″, but we have such a large open space, I went a little longer.
step two- optional
To add some pizzazz, spray paint your hairpin legs gold.
step three- attach fabric
Start making the seat of your bench by layering on the quilt batting. I bought enough to have two layers of batting for extra cushion.
On top of your batting, place your fabric. I fell in LOVE with this floral satin fabric from Joann’s. It maybe isn’t the most practical, but it sure is pretty! Start stapling your fabric onto your wood board.
On the corners, pull the fabric tight and fold over like you would a present. Be generous with your staples (I apparently was- lol)!
Another optional step- I used the last bit of fabric to cover up any wood from showing. This is the “make it pretty” step. You could do this with black felt too.
step four- attach the legs
Use screws to attach the pretty hairpin legs to the bench seat. Flip it over and obsess how pretty the bench is that you made from scratch.
all done!
Next, accessorize your heart out and take pictures of your cute dog 😉 !
This is where we put our shoes on. I put my cutest ones out for a picture. Another honest note, that basket is usually full of Don’s toys that he’s hauling to the “dump” or the nearest “construction site.”
The floral fabric is seriously my favorite! It is so happy and adds much needed pattern in this blank slate of a house.
You can see from this picture how close the bench is to my little office in the entry. I am really happy with how the entry is coming together!

This is a beginner’s level DIY. If you don’t have a saw to cut the board, you can have your Home Depot or Lowe’s cut it for you for free. Then you just need a drill to attach the legs. Don’t you love doable, customizable projects?!

This is so cute and looks easy! I love that it has kind of a mid-century nod with the legs too. I’ve been looking for something to put in our family room area and this would be a great spot to sit and put shoes on before leaving the house. And easy enough for anyone to do! Thanks for sharing.
