Today is such an exciting day! I get to share how my master bedroom came out! We finished building the last of the bookcases and installing crown molding on Sunday and then installed the room. I’m pretty happy with how colorful, textural, bright, and happy this room turned out!

before
As a quick reminder, here is how the room started. Our home, Fairview Cottage, is a 1905 Victorian that had been rented for years. The space wasn’t terrible, but there were some weird elements and it definitely didn’t feel pulled together or special.
To transform this room, we tore out the bamboo wood floors (and donated them- we found pink floors underneath!). The closet was relocated, the ceiling got shiplap, I painted and wallpapered. My husband built us a custom bookcase. And little by little, every part of the room was updated.
Of course, it got worse before it got better! And now I get to share with you how it turned out!
catch up on the master bedroom makeover!

wallpaper
For a successful design, I think that there needs to be one element that inspires the rest of the space. For me, that is the Birds of Paradise wallpaper from Milton & King in the color way Tropical. The colors (pink, mint, and mustard) are echoed through the room. My grandma is a bird lover and she messaged me about how much she loves those birds! And now the wallpaper is even more meaningful and special to me!
wood floors
The bamboo floors that were in here weren’t the worst, but they were dinged up. They also squeaked quite a bit. So we pulled them up and put down underlayment and white oak floors from Overstock. I was surprised at how much I ended up loving this element of the room! They are a sandy grey color, hide dirt nicely, but feel so calm and serene in an otherwise busy room. I now want them throughout my home!
rug
I love having a rug in the bedroom so when you get out of bed, your feet land on a soft surface. Visually, rugs do so much to anchor a room! The rug for this room is an 8’x10′ beauty from Courtisan. I love the large scale pattern. Varying patterns in a room creates interest and I love how the rug works with the wallpaper.
When the rug was unrolled, I was so thrilled to see the smaller diamonds are a subtle blue and pink. It is perfect for the room! And so, so soft!
bed
After the wallpaper, I selected the bed. I had a tight height restriction- 50″ is the tallest I could go to fit under the slanted wall. I found this mint, velvet tufted queen bed on Overstock and I fell in love! It fits perfectly and the mint coordinates nicely with the wallpaper. Bonus points for it being really cozy to read in (a must in my book)!
bedding
For the bedding, I wanted to stick with neutrals that have beautiful texture! The white duvet cover is from Overstock. I layered that with a pink tasseled throw, a round cushion, and tasseled euro pillows (which are no longer available). The sheets are striped and have the exact colors from the wallpaper! They are from Roostery. The grey floral pillow is from Arianna Belle. To make the mattress look extra thick and soft, I added a feather bed from Hayneedle.
nightstand
I chose to use two different nightstands in the master- mostly because we already had a campaign nightstand (on the left side) that we loved. When that one was out of stock, I picked a coordinating nightstand for my husband’s side of the room. Honestly, I wish I’d just gotten two of the second nightstand! The height works a little better with the bed. I like the detail of the white Greek key border too.
For my side, I wanted to add a special detail. I found the prettiest wallpaper from Spoonflower and wanted to put it somewhere subtle in the room! I love opening the drawer and having a special surprise, just for me. The wallpaper is of peonies with a mint background. I have a little left over and am dreaming of the places to put it!
I love Spoonflower’s wallpaper because you can buy it in a huge variety of sizes. You can also choose if its peel and stick or traditional paste wallpaper. I went with a peel and stick for in the drawers and it was so easy to cut and stick right in! I have people ask me all of the time how to use girly colors and patterns with a partner who isn’t fond of them, and this is a great way to do so!
lamps
To me, symmetry is beautiful! So I put matching lamps on the nightstands. I love the gold base and the simple gourd shape. They are from Overstock and are sold in a set of 2.
nightstand corner
Next to my nightstand, I have the sweetest little area! I love adding plants to a room as they clean the air and really elevate the space. These brass planters from Overstock are gorgeous and super affordable!
The mint dog bed is from Homepop (also available on Overstock) and Lucy is a big fan of it! She either sleeps with Don or in her new bed. I love how classy it looks in the space. Its a little piece of furniture and I think its adorable!
The mirror is from Hayneedle and I’m obsessed with it! I am a big fan of the current trend of Chinoiserie. The mirror is white lacquered and looks so pretty on the wallpaper! It breaks up the pattern on the walls while still playing nicely with it.
bench
Since we have a bigger closet now and nightstands with storage, we opted out of having a dresser. But to make sure that there is enough storage while adding a nice place to put on our shoes, I chose the Culla Bench from Article for the foot of the bed. I love how sleek and modern the bench is while adding some personality with the legs. The drawers are perfect for storing extra linens and open effortlessly.
bookcase

The back wall of our bedroom used to be really choppy and not make sense. We exposed the chimney, relocated the closet, and then built in a bookcase. It took $250 worth of supplies and 4 days of work to construct it, but this wall was totally worth it! I wanted to make a rainbow bookcase with my own twist of adding coordinating art and accessories. I love it!
elephant pink art / sconce / fireplace / fireplace medallion / pink poodle / pink globe / pink door art / red flower art / red owl / terra-cotta pottery / orange window art / yellow candle holder / yellow you are my sunshine art / yellow figurine / green planter / green plant art / bird art / mini succulent / mint landscape art / mint pineapple / blue Greek art / blue bird bath / Charleston art / blue tray / purple amethyst / purple doll art / wood orb / brown barn art / box / black and white art / white typewriter art / hands bookends / bench / pink pillow (no longer available) / dog pillow / marble fabric on bench / shutters
rainbow books
All of the books are thrift store finds. I’ve been collecting them since June and they are mostly home decor books (or travel or cook books)- all things that inspire me! The art is all from Minted and accessories are mostly from Overstock. Full sources linked above.
I am a huge fan of adding ambient lighting to a room. Above the bookcases, the three sconces are from Lamps Plus. They are affordable and come with that big fun light bulb! Isn’t it those fun details that really make a difference?!
If any room needed a velvet pink ottoman with a brass base, it was this one ;)! The ottoman is also from Overstock and it works nicely for extra seating, a place to set a tray, or a launch pad for my three year old.
I’ve gotten a few requests for a tutorial for how to build these bookcases. Look for that soon with some tips for styling a bookcase.
The shutters on the windows are from The Shutter Store. They work perfectly in this tight spot (and on the smaller window). Shutters are great for insulating and add a European look to the space.
window seat
Under the window I thought it would be fun to add a window seat! The bench is from Overstock. If you’re needing a smaller bench, try searching for a twin bench. This one is 35″ wide and the perfect size for this spot!
For the bench cushion, I sewed marble fabric from Spoonflower to make a cushion. I’m pretty proud of how it turned out! Spoonflower has a HUGE variety of patterns and they’ll print you any size that you need. I wanted a pattern that had pink in it but worked with the wallpaper. I love the modern look of marble and think having it in pink makes it even better!
The larger velvet pink pillow is from Arianna Belle Pillows (no longer available). The lumbar pillow is from Roostery (a sister company to Spoonflower). I am a dog lover so when I spotted this pillow with my dogs on it- Cavalier Kings Charles Spaniels, I was thrilled!
fireplace
When I was planning out this room, I was searching on Hayneedle’s website and saw that they carry electric fireplaces! We live in a really cold area, so I knew it’d be perfect! I found a petite fireplace that works with the existing brick chimney and is affordable. The ambience that the fireplace adds is unreal! You now know where I’ll be all winter 😉
vanity

My vanity and chair are both from Grandin Road. The mirror is from Target and no longer available (here is a similar option) I LOVE having a nice place to get ready! That chair is so comfortable and I love spending a few quiet minutes here everyday. The peonies are faux in the prettiest marble vase. They are from IBB Design and are super realistic looking. I love having flowers that look beautiful all year long!
For a lamp, I choose this super functional one from Lamps Plus. I LOVE that it has an outlet and USB built into the top. Perfect for curling my hair or charging my phone while I get ready.
seating area
In front of the shorter window, I wanted to create a seating area. I thought pink chairs would be fun and when I found these chairs with the brass base from Overstock, it was love at first sight!
Between the chairs, is a budget friendly round end table that coordinates with the chair bases. Its from HomePop (available at Overstock). The floral lumbar pillow is from Arianna Bell Pillows. I love the splash of pattern it adds to the chairs!
The gorgeous pottery on top of the end table is from Jill Rosenwald. She made this in her studio in Boston. The details are perfect and this piece is so special to me!
The art behind the chair is from 527 Photos and was one of the original things in my master (you can see how it used to be hung here). The modern brass floor lamp is from Lamps Plus. Its the perfect height for tucking under the slanted walls! I love the style of the round top!
door area
Right next to the entrance of the room used to be the strangest wall of outlets, phone jacks, and fans. It looked terrible and so I was so excited when we were able to pull most of it out. Now there is a simple area with a few pieces of art (moons and rainbow) from Minted. They have an option to frame art in a brass thin trim and I love it!
On the other side of the door is a larger wall (the other side of the wall is my closet). I wanted to add a wall hanging and LOVE this one from Overstock. It adds a ton of interest and texture. I like that it gives the impression, right when you walk into the room, that it is an interesting space.
millwork
One of the things that I think really makes this space is the millwork. I used baseboards, crown molding, shiplap, and chair molding all from Metrie. They absolutely add depth to the room and bring back some of the original character that had been striped out of it. The ship lap ceiling in particular is one of my favorite details.
For a tutorial for how to install shiplap, click here.
fan
The ceiling fan is from Kichler. I ended up buying white fan blades to help it better fit into the room. Check out this blog post with some of my favorite fans (and why I selected them for my home).
before and after
And now! After 6 weeks, the room is complete! We’d been sleeping in our playroom during the renovation (which has the drywall off, waiting for repair) so it is ridiculously nice to sleep in a finished space! There is absolutely something to having a room that inspires you and makes you happy. That feels special and intentional. I randomly walk in here all the time just to get look at it- lol! I love it and hope you do too!
Make sure to check out everyone’s finished rooms! I’m so excited to click through and see how each room ended up!
