Hi friends! Its week two of the One Room Challenge! Last week I announced that I’ll be redoing my master bedroom. This week was all about the demo and planning for how the room will turn out. As a reminder, here’s how the room started out-
week 1 / week 2 / week 3 / week 4 / week 5 / week 6- Reveal
floor plan
Above is the original floor plan for the room. I decided that since the room will be all torn up, I might as well move the tiny closet! This house is lacking in storage so I’m looking at adding it whenever I can. Here’s the floor plan with the closet moved (and furniture in place)!
I’ll be moving the closet to the top left of the room. It’ll more than double in size! We’ll have a queen bed with two nightstands and a rug underneath. To the right of the bed, I’m planning on adding in built in bookshelves, a little reading nook under the window, and a fireplace.
demo
Since the floor plan was finalized, it was time to start demo! We tore out the floors and guess what?! The old floors used to be pink- lol! They are original and in rough shape. I’ll be covering them with new oak floors from Overstock. By moving the closet to this corner, I’ll be able to hide that attic access a little easier- yay!
The closet is officially out! We also started exposing the brick on the old fireplace. We’ll add an electric fireplace to the front of the brick. I’m still trying to decide if I should white wash the bricks or not. What do you vote- leave it original or white wash the brick? Let me know in the comments!
The fan and shutters will stay in the room, but pretty much everything else is going! P.s. you can see that there is a big hole in the pink floors and a grey spot where it looks like the last owner tried to refinish the floors. I love how Don’s floors turned out, but I think its best to cover these up.
You can see that the walls used to be pink too. Someone used to be QUITE the pink lover!
mood board
moon art / rug / bed / floor / planters / ottoman / lamps / night stand / chair / table / art / shiplap / wallpaper
Ready for the mood board for the room?! As I mentioned last week, the bird wallpaper from Milton and King will be the starting point to the room. It’ll go on the wall behind the bed and on the outside of the new closet. A mint bed from Overstock will look so pretty on the front of the wallpaper! Especially with two white nightstands on either side. A white patterned Couristan rug will go under the bed.
By the small window, I’m planning on doing a little seating area with those fabulous blush and gold chair and the gold end table! Where the old closet was will now be the spot for my vanity and chair. The ceiling will be white shiplap from Metrie (I’m so excited for this detail)!
rainbow shelves
The wall with the window on it is a little awkward. To remedy that, I’ll be building in some bookshelves. The main inspiration for the shelves is the Rainbow Bookcase from A Beautiful Mess:
I wanted to find a way to make it my own. I’ve started collecting bright colored books from thrift stores, but I still needed a way to make it a little unique and special. Then I saw this image–
I LOVE how they used matching accessories and art with the books that are arranged by color. I figured that’d be a fun way to shake up the rainbow shelf! Here’s my mood board for that wall so you can see what I’m thinking!
pink door art / poodle / orange pot / orange door art / you are my sunshine art / yellow pot / green leaf art / green plant / blue tray / blue neighborhood art / purple vase / purple doll art /
I’ll be using art from Minted in lots of different colors. Those’ll correspond with colorful accessories from Overstock. I am SO looking forward to getting this wall going! I know it’ll be special and a show stopper!
Now you know the plan, you’ve seen the fabulous pink floors (lol- was this house meant to be mine or what?!) and hopefully you’re getting excited to see it all come back together! For now, make sure to check out what everyone else is up to this week!
