Off our kitchen is a little powder room. To be honest, this tiny space was one of the selling points of the house! My husband and I both work from home so having 1.5 bathrooms meant there are options (shall we say) if someone is in the other bathroom. ANYWAY it was plain and boring so I decided to redo it! I wanted to add some personality (with things like adding a bathroom sink skirt) to it. Let me show you!
DIY tote bag design
This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Cricut. All opinions are 100% mine.
Hello! As you may know, I’m a huuuuge fan of thrifting. And honestly, I’m missing it so much right now! But, until it’s safe to shop in person,I thought I’d make a DIY tote bag design so I could have a bag to take thrifting. I used to go 1-2 a week and I like to bring my own bag so I don’t have to use a plastic one. Some stores charge a $1 for using a plastic bag so I just bring my own
And although thinking about the stuff I can’t do right now may seem sad, preparing for when we can enjoy my favorite things has been helping.
I’ll tell you something cheesy- I like to imagine when everything is open again. How happy I’ll be to drop my son off at school! And go to the beach! And thrift shop. And have dinner at a restaurant with my friends. I picture it and think about how joyful it’ll be to do these normal things that I once took for granted. It’s great because I get to feel happy picturing it now.
the Cricut Joy
To make this project, I’m going to be using the Cricut Joy. It’s a smaller cutting machine from Cricut. Which is great! I live in a tiny house- 890 square feet! And have zero space for a craft room. So all my crafting is done on my dining room table. Using the Joy is so great because I can make things and the machine only takes a little room and can be done quickly.
One of the amazing things about the Joy is that you can use it as a companion to the Cricut Maker or Air 2 since it has unique features like not needing a mat or it can make extra long cuts. OR you can use it on its own if you haven’t gotten a bigger cutting machine yet.
Another benefit I wanted to mention is that the Joy is that you don’t need a mat with most of the materials like vinyl or labels. This means that there’s less to buy, less to store and it’s faster to make items!
The Cricut Joy is small, but there’s so many simple projects you can make with it! I thought I’d show you three.
diy tote bag design
SUPPLIES
- Cricut Joy
- Smart Iron-on– I used Pink, Blush, Mustard, Bright Teal, and Teal
- Weeding Tool, scissors, burnish tool
- Cricut EasyPress mini
- Canvas Bag
step 1 create the design
Start by designing what you want to cut out on Cricut Design space. I used font available in the Cricut Design Space and saved my design here if you want to do exactly what I did.
To make your own words, type words and then change the font to one you like. I kept a measuring tape and the tote bag next to my computer so I could easily figure out what would fit and size accordingly.
I changed the color on each item as I imported the image so I knew what color of iron-on I wanted each piece to be cut out on. That way, when it was time for cutting, all the pink items (and teal items and yellow items, etc.) are grouped together so they can be cut together.
Click Make It at the top of the canvas to continue the process.
step 2 print the design
Next, you’ll how you want to cut the design. I choose without mat since I was using the smart iron-on.
Before cutting, make sure to mirror each image. This flips the image and is extremely important to do if you’re printing words. Make sure to toggle over on the mirror setting or else you’ll get backwards letters/pattern.
Set the material on Design Space to “Smart iron-on.” This will tell your machine how deep to cut the pattern. Feed the vinyl into the machine shiny side side down. Then push Go and it’ll start cutting! Repeat for each color you’re printing.
step 3 weed out the design
And now, since the design is cut, it’s time to weed the iron-on vinyl. This is when you remove all the vinyl that’s not part of the design. Start in one corner and dig the tip of the weeding tool into the vinyl (as long as you don’t dig into the design). Then pull the vinyl off with your fingers. Use the weeding tool again if you need to get into any tight spots.
step 4 adhere iron on vinyl
Finally, it’s time to adhere the vinyl to the tote bag. For this, I’m suing a Cricut Mini EasyPress, but you could also use an iron. To prep, I put rags in the inside of the bag. This gives you a small “ironing board” and protects the surface you’re ironing on.
Now, to adhere the vinyl, set the Mini EasyPress on the highest setting. Press the bag for 5-10 seconds to help flatten the surface you’re working on which also begins the adhesion process.
Next, iron the design directly onto the plastic. Hold the EasyPress down for 15-30 seconds Then pick it up and move it if the image is larger than the iron or EasyPress.
Once the decal has cooled down, peel back the plastic sheet from the image. If the vinyl is adhered to the backpack and the plastic comes up easily, you’re in good shape! If it is stilly sticking or pulling up, put the plastic down and apply more heat.
I made two of these and on the second one I had issues getting the iron-on to adhere-
Here’s what I did wrong- to prep the bag for adding on the vinyl I ironed it first and used steam. I think that I must have not totally dried the bag. Water is the enemy of getting the iron-on to adhere so MAKE SURE you’re working on 100% dry material.
after
Here is the tote bag all complete! I’m really happy with how it turned out! I also considered using the words “get thrifty with it.” There’s so many options for making a completely diy tote bag design!
One day I’ll be able to fill this with the best knick knacks! I’m counting down the days.
other uses for the Cricut Joy- label
Another thing the Cricut Joy is great for is by creating labels! For this I used the Smart Label and a black Cricut pen. The pen replaces the need for ink. You just put it where the cutting tool normally is and it draws the words for the label! Here’s the link to my project in Design Space I used to make labels for my sugar and flour.
Note, after my label printed I colored the inside of the words.
other uses for the Cricut Joy- cards
One of the coolest parts of the Cricut Joy is that you can make really intricate cool cards in minutes! You just put your card on a card mat and then choose a design in Design Space (this is the one I used). Then watch it cut!
When you’re done, remove the cut out pieces of the design. Then, tuck a piece of card stock in the card so the design shows. The perfect size of card stock comes with the cards from Cricut. It’s so easy and the cards are gorgeous!
Conclusion
I made these three projects- the card, labels, and DIY tote bag design all in one morning and it was so fun to just sit and create! It was my first time trying out the new Cricut Joy and I found it really easy to figure out. I’m loving how you don’t really need mats so making projects is fast. The size is also really great- so easy to grab and make something quickly.

$100 Kitchen Update in 1 Day
Thank you to Elkay for sponsoring this post! All opinions are my own.
During these last few weeks, Iβve been doing a lot of reflection on previous projects that have brought me joy as we find ourselves in this crazy time. One in particular that I think about is the home updates I made back at my home in Utah (such great memories to think of), and how I can use those updates as inspiration for our new home in Florida!
When I moved into my Utah house, there were lots of home updates I desperately wanted and needed to make. Pretty early in the process, I switched out my beat-up stainless steel sink for a gorgeous Quartz Classic sink from Elkay without majorly renovating my kitchen!
Now, with my Florida kitchen remodel, I’m planning a gut job, so you better believe that I’ll be using an Elkay sink again! [Read more…]
How to Frame a TV on the Wall
Thank you to Bulbrite for sponsoring this post!
A few weeks ago, our friend gave us his old TV. It was a joyous occasion because we’d lived for 3 months without a TV! We put it up on the record player and it worked like a charm. But it didn’t look good. I knew that I’d want to frame it the moment we put it up. Why? Just because you have a TV doesn’t mean it has to be an eyesore. Here’s how to frame a TV on the wall.

Rainbow Wall Hanging Kit
Last year I made a tutorial for how to make a rainbow wall hanging and it’s since become one of my most popular blog posts! I thought I would try out some better rope and try it with one small change. It turned out great so I thought I’d walk you through this tutorial in case you want to make one too.
My Yearly Photo Book
In 2007, I got married and soon heard about starting a blog. I barely knew what a blog was, but I went ahead and wrote about being a newlywed, my travels and job and what we did with our friends. I’d take pictures and type up what I did- it was fun! A few years in, I found out that I could make a book by printing up my blog. And that’s where my yearly photo book was born! [Read more…]
DIY Umbrella Stand
For months, I’ve been planning a deck renovation. Then, a few weeks ago the furniture started to arrive and it’s been so exciting! We finally have a place to sit outside! One of the items I ordered was an umbrella- totally forgetting to get a stand. But then when I priced them out, they were pretty expensive. So I decided to make my own. Here’s a my DIY umbrella stand.
before of my patio once the furniture arrived
Side note, I know that it may seem insensitive to be working on a project like this right now. There are so much bigger things going on with the world. But my truth is that this project had been planned long before I had a clue that we’d stuck at home.
I am so grateful for the distraction and to have one more “room” to hang out in. I’m doing my best to make the most of this time because keeping busy with projects like this has helped me feel a little more in control.
The thing is, I feel now, more than ever it’s a great time to make your house a home. Make it somewhere you want to be because you’re probably there all the time. Might as well have it be a beautiful place! I’m going to be focusing on affordable DIY’s and ideas for decorating on a budget (like this post with 15 ideas for how to decorate a patio for cheap).
But even if that’s too much to take on, organizing and cleaning will make a difference. Our surroundings are one thing that we can control and if they are in order, we’ll feel better. I believe that and hope I can pass on some ideas for creating spaces you love no matter your budget.
Hello Weekend!
Hi friends! Well, it’s been another week of weirdness. Who could have ever guessed that’d we need to stay home and not get close to anyone but our families?! It feels straight out of a movie! I’ve done my best this week to keep my spirits high. There are so many times that it all seems too much. But for me, keeping busy has been helping exponentially.
On the schedule for next week’s DIY is making a frame for my TV, redoing my son’s nightstand, and wallpapering and decorating the powder bathroom. I should also probably finish painting my house since the sides or back aren’t done yet!
Behind the scenes of Don helping paint the signs for the front of our house. I figure it was good hand eye coordination for home schooling π
This is the image that’s inspiring me this week- the orchids, the white parts, the subtle coastal look with layered accessories is so good!
A few weeks ago, I shared some ideas for enjoying this time at home. And it got me thinking of the fun hobbies I could pick up.
So I decided to try out needle point! Which is something I saw my mom and grandma doing when I was younger.
Plus, doing crafts has actually been shown to reduce anxiety and stress! When you work with your hands, it forces you to be in the current moment. Then you can forget everything else and just create. (source)
So if I can make something pretty and de-stress, I’m in!
But also, needlepoint has totally made its comeback with the granny chic look. And I’m fully on board with it!

Here’s one of the needlepoint pages that inspires me! I mean, how gorgeous would it be to have an entire rug that was embroidered?
Cute Needlepoint Kit Roundup
1 bee / 2 shell / 3 dog / 4 plants / 5 beach / 6 lemons / 7 zinnia / 8 VW / 9 kitty / 10 cupcake / 11 octopus / 12 flowers / 13 house / 14 butterfly / 15 sloth / 16 teacup / 17 dragonfly / 18 castle / 19 butterflies / 20 rainbow
Now, if you want to try it out too, I rounded up some cute needlepoint kits. And they’re all for beginners, so you won’t have to worry about them being too difficult.
Since I’m still in the process of decorating our Florida house, a lot of these have the granny chic look I’m going for.
Also, a few of them are for kids! #3, #10 and #14 are all made for little kid hands, ages 6 and up. This could be a really fun project to do as a family.
But I’m really loving the modern look too, like the octopus in #11! It’s cute but also looks pretty simple to do.
What about you? Have you ever tried needlepoint? Which one looks like fun to you? Tell me in the comments!
Living Room Makeover Ideas
This post is sponsored by Modsy
The living room in this house is surprisingly big! For a 890 square foot house, this room feels palatial. Which, after moving without any furniture to this house in January, it felt empty.
After working on it a bit, I had one wall of the room looking super cute, but I was a little bit stumped with the rest of the space. Where should I put a desk? What seating could I do? Should I try another layout? How could I make it feel more cozy and pulled together?
This is the space our family actually spends a lot of time in. This is where my office is and I work during the day. We have a TV in here so we watch shows through the day (especially right now). At night, after my son goes to sleep, this is my sanctuary and where I unwind. Having it feel good is very important to me.
I want this room to be great because it’s also the first thing people see when they come into my home. So I decided to team up with Modsy to create a plan and then I’d work off of it. If you havenβt heard of Modsy, they are an online interior design service that create the most gorgeous life-like renderings of your roomβs design that I have ever seen.
