Valentine’s Day is right around the corner! Don has been begging me to decorate, so a few days ago we put up the small box of decorations that has been in storage. For smaller holidays, I like to keep things simple while still being festive. I did add a little Valentine’s art that I have available for a free download if you keep reading!

Project Plans for 2019
In January, as I was redoing the playroom I kept thinking about the projects I want to complete for the rest of the year. We moved in this house in July and this sweet house sure needed a lot of work! We’ve worked really hard to get it where it is and I’m so proud of how far its come! But we have some big plans for 2019!
1. office
White Desks on a Budget
The next project on my to do list is my office! When we moved in six months ago, this was the room where everything got dumped. A few months ago, I redid the layout and it was better. But still, the office isn’t how I want it. Time to do more to the space!
Here’s how the office looked one month ago (with all the playroom furniture in here)-

How to Make a Free Little Library
In January, I was trying to do 25 DIY projects. Well- I did 24. This free little library is the last project from this series. It took a little longer than I planned, but I think it was worth the wait!
If you haven’t heard of free little libraries- they are cabinets made by homeowners and put outside their homes that are filled with books. This is a fun way to embrace a love of reading and foster a sense of community. I LOVE everything free little libraries stand for! Plus, they’re a great way to creatively make something that will benefit your neighbors!

Jungle Themed Playroom Remodel
Thank you to the Home Depot for sponsoring this post!
Well hello there! I am so, so excited to share with you our playroom reveall! Almost exactly 6 months ago, we moved into our 1905 Victorian home and focused on redoing bedrooms, the kitchen, and the bathroom. Once the “important” rooms were livable, I was really excited to make a small room over into a playroom.

We feel really lucky to have the space to dedicate a whole room to play! And my three year son Don has been over the moon excited too! The room started out as basic (but dated)- the walls were plaster walls covered in paneling covered in red wallpaper. A pipe and chimney made figuring out a furniture layout tricky.
The space had zero storage and was just a glorified hallway leading to the bedrooms with no real purpose. Here’s some pictures from the listing of our home:
before

To begin the space, I created a mood board with all of the different elements I wanted to include. All of the furniture and most of the decor and textiles comes from The Home Depot! Their website is full of gorgeous furnishings for any space!
playroom mood board

sunburst / tic tac toe / fireplace tv stand / barrel chair / pillow cover / Chesterfield loveseat / rug / mural / kids chair / lamp
Once I had a vision for the space, demo day started! We ended up tearing out the old chimney and taking the room down to the studs so that we could drywall and add in a closet. I installed a tiger wallpaper mural that really influenced all of the design choices for the room.

Drywall went up with the new closet. We painted the walls- mostly Ultra Pure White by Behr with an accent wall in Spring Reflection by Behr. Next, we added in a laminate floor from the Home Decorator’s collection in Quiet Oak (I have a full tutorial for laying those floors on my blog).
drywall, paint, floors

To really finish off the details of the room, I installed a new fan, baseboards, a shiplap ceiling, and crown molding. Finally, it was time to load in the furniture and decor! The best part!!! Ready for the reveal?!
playroom reveal
Let’s start with a quick video tour of the room!
Ta da! Isn’t it a beautiful space?! Let’s talk about some of my favorite elements.
wallpapered wall

The wallpapered wall is my favorite! The La Petite Barrel Chair from The Home Decorators Collection adds some interest and is a cozy spot to sit for the adults. The details in the carving on this chair are beyond gorgeous!
To me, brass details add that little sparkle every room needs. The Sunburst Sculpture with the marble base adds a fun touch of whimsey to the console table.

This is a small room, but I wanted to pack it with storage. The Hamilton White Console Table is a beautiful piece (I love the plantation shutters). Best of all, it hides toys nicely- can you tell my son is obsessed with garbage trucks?! Pretty toy storage is my love language- so having some toys in seagrass baskets is perfect.
To encourage lots of play time, I added in a Modern Traditions neutral rug from Home Depot. It is really soft and I think the colors work nicely in the room and will hide dirt nicely.
loveseat

I’ve always wanted to use a Chesterfield sofa in my home. I think it is the perfect traditional classic sofa and I love that Home Depot offers it for such a great price on their website! I ended up ordering the loveseat size since I have a smaller room.
The beautiful blue pillow cover on the sofa is from The Company Store via Home Depot! The embroidery on the pillow is exquisite! When doing a more neutral space, I like to add lots of interest with texture and this pillow really does the job nicely.

Next to the sofa is Nailhead Light Washed Oak end table. It matches with the coffee table and I like that I have two pieces that coordinate to add unity to the room. They both have tiers on them for extra storage. As our toy collection changes and expands, I can add baskets of toys on these shelves as needed.
Until then, I have the cutest tic tac toe brass and wood set on the shelf. Three cheers for beautiful and fun decor!
For the lamp, I stuck with the brass and marble accent theme with the Stephan Table Lamp.
fireplace

Our old home is a bit drafty upstairs. Because of that, I was SO excited to see that the Home Depot has TV consoles with electric fireplaces built inside. Guys- this Hamilton Fireplace TV Stand is life changing! It turns on and off with a remote and you can choose the temperature. Plus, it really adds the cozy factor from the “fire.”
play table

In a small space, you really need every element working for you. I LOVE that the play table opens up for additional storage! We have play doh, stickers, stamps, coloring books inside. And the best part? It closes to all the art items that can really clutter a space are hidden away!
Can we take a second and swoon over these kids chairs?! Aren’t the bentwood chairs just stunning?! They add a modern element while the finish is still nice and neutral. If you have to have kids chairs, might as well have pretty ones!
toy storage

As you might have been able to tell from this post, I’m pretty serious about storage that is beautiful and functional! Here’s a sneak peek into the toy closet for some more examples. I made the dress up rack and it can wheel out of the closet during play time.
For me, Lego storage can be REALLY tricky! I’ve decided that for us, dividing them into different colors works best. I got creative with my storage containers and they’ve worked nicely! On the top shelf you can see that I’m using a condiment organizer for some of the colors (red, yellow, green, and blue).

For colors we don’t have as many of, I organized them into a tea bag box. Having the Legos organized by color makes it SO easy to find the pieces when building up the sets. We also have a bin of built pieces my son can play with when its not building time.
play kitchen

I’m a big lover of imaginative play! So when Don asked for a play kitchen, I dove in and made over an old entertainment center into a mini kitchenette for him. We both love it! I share the full tutorial for making it here.
Next, I have a little area where I can display Don’s art (we have a bigger area in his room too). I love this quote by Picasso- that “Every child is an artist.” So I made a little printable with the art. If you’d like this art too, you can sign up for my newsletter here and I’ll send you a link to my resource library with the printable in it!

The absolute best part about being finished with this room is playing in it! Our whole family loves to be in the space that was designed perfectly for our needs. I love that everything has a place and is organized! This makes cleaning up so much less of a chore.
All of the furniture, textiles, and rug from the Home Depot worked SO nicely together to build a cohesive room. Thank you to Home Depot for working with on my space to make all of my playroom dreams come true!

How to Make Easy Hanging Planters
I have a quick and easy DIY for you today! The next room I’m going to be working on is my office. I love surrounding myself with plants so I thought a hanging planter would be nice next to my desk. I wanted something that would incorporate my love of gold and color while being a nod to midcentury decor.

How to Install Crown Molding
Today’s tutorial- how to install crown molding. My husband and I have done crown molding in a bunch of rooms and I’m finally doing a tutorial. Why? Because it is actually really tricky to install! The first time we installed it, we put it up flat. Months later we were watching a DIY show and realized that we did it wrong- lol!
The beauty of the crown molding is that it beautifully caps off the top of the room. It is installed at an angle which makes it a little tricky. Now that we have it down to more of an art, I’m ready to document my best tips to make it much easier.
The crown molding went up in the playroom this weekend. After finishing up the shiplap ceiling, it was the perfect finishing touch! [Read more…]
DIY Play Kitchen
When my son was little (less than 2!) I made him a DIY play kitchen from a $10 piece of thrift store furniture. It turned out so cute and we played with it until we moved. It was broken in a few spots so we didn’t take it with us.
Now, almost 2 years later, my son has been begging for a play kitchen again. Since we’ve been working on our playroom, I figured the timing was perfect! This time, I took what I learned from the last one and improved it! [Read more…]
DIY Dress up Rack
Let me just come out and say it- the playroom is DONE!!!!! I’ve spent countless hours in the last few days caulking and painting and honestly, I’m exhausted. The playroom will be photographed tomorrow and I can’t wait to share it. Keep reading to the bottom for a small sneak peek of the space.
In between doing the finishing touches to the playroom, I squeezed in a fun project- a DIY dress up rack. I know that dressing up is usually associated as a girl activity, but my little guy loves to dress up too! He has a fireman, garbage man, chef, doctor, and a few other costumes. I think that anything that adds imaginative play, is a good thing!
With the playroom, I’m trying to gather all of his toys and activities to one space, so I thought a dress up clothes rack would be perfect. And it was crazy easy! Let’s get started! [Read more…]
How to Install a Shiplap Ceiling
One of my absolute favorite parts of my main bedroom renovation is the shiplap ceiling. It adds SO much interest to the space and was surprisingly easy to install.

So when it came time to redo the playroom, I knew I wanted to incorporate that same look in this room. I’m using real shiplap so if you’ve wanted to try it out or see how it works, this tutorial for how to install a shiplap ceiling is for you!
